Dr. Alvin Trivelpiece Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Impactful Career Contributions

Dr. Trivelpiece was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as the director of the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Research

HENDERSON, NV, April 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Alvin Trivelpiece has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such a position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and promise in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Following his term as director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which is one of the major research and engineering facilities operated by the Department of Energy, he has been a consultant to Sandia National Laboratories facilities in Albuquerque, NM, and other DOE national laboratories. In 1981, he was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as the director of the Department of Energy Office of Energy Research. These positions follow a career as a professor in physics and engineering at University of California, Berkeley and the University of Maryland, College Park. His academic research focused on plasma physics, particle accelerators, and thermonuclear fusion research led to the publication in 1973 of a book, "Principles of Plasma Physics," coauthored with Professor Nicholas Krall.

Dr. Trivelpiece received a B.S. from California Polytechnic State University, as well as an M.S. and Ph.D. from California Institute of Technology. After graduation, he was granted a Fulbright Scholarship to the Netherlands after which he joined the UC faculty and subsequently the department of physics at the University of Maryland.

As director of the DOE Office of Energy Research, he had opportunities to initiate the establishment of several major scientific and technical facilities related to DOE missions. During this time, Trivelpiece also worked with Russian Academician E. P. Velikhov to stimulate the activities that eventually became the International Thermonuclear Reactor (ITER), now under construction in France. Other major DOE facilities initiated during this period include the Advanced Photon Source, Advanced Light Source, the Spallation Neutron Source, and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Perhaps the most important activity was his decision to approve the reallocation of $4 million for DOE to begin the Human Genome Project! While initially controversial, this activity has proved to be of great importance to all. In 1985, Dr. Charles DeLisi, (then director of DOE's Office of Health and Environmental Research) was the leader of the effort the led to additional funding of $16 million the following year that accelerated development of this effort.

Dr. Trivelpiece is a member of the American Nuclear Society and the American Association of University Professors, and is a Fellow of the AAAS, the American Physical Society, and the IEEE. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and is distinguished alumni from Caltech and Cal Poly. He received a Gold Medal for Distinguished Service from the Secretary of Energy.
