An accomplished listee, Mr. Archerd celebrates over 40 years' experience as a professional educator, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in the field of education, most notably in mathematics.
About Robert K. Archerd
Prior to his retirement, Mr. Archerd's most recent positions saw him as a central school district K-12 coordinator of mathematics, an author of mathematics programs for schools, specifically for grades K-8, and a kindergarten-through-graduate-level university mathematics and science educator.
As a young teacher, Mr. Archerd first attracted the attention of LA District-level instructional leaders due to his students' unusually high math scores. When a district team visited his classroom, they witnessed instructional methods with which they were not yet familiar and asked him to explain. He said we tend to "teach by telling," an approach that has never really worked. His background in developmental psychology led him to realize the that students needed to be actively engaged with their learning material and learned best by doing the math (and science) hands-on while working together, discussing what they're doing and by later writing about it. Having good conceptual understanding of the material was the real key, and of more or less equal importance is that everything be taught in a context, with nothing ever being taught in isolation. An example of this needed context is the teaching together of area and perimeter, neither of which can be properly understood without the other.
Impressed by what they saw and heard, they hired Mr. Archerd to work out of a district office, to pull together representatives from all 60 of the East Los Angeles Area G Schools (with traditionally low math scores), to get them all on board with the basic precepts of his approach, to work together as a team and use horizontal (across grade level) and vertical (up-and-down grade levels) articulation to keep everyone on the "same page." This led to Mr. Archerd's most impressive and proudest achievement: leading these 60 Los Angeles Unified School District (Area G) K-12 Schools to unprecedented levels of growth in mathematics. The 60 schools under his direction showed the most growth in mathematics achievement in the entire nation, as measured by standardized tests, for the seven-year period, 1975 through 1981.
After working as a district-level administrator for a number of years, Mr. Archerd chose to return to his first love, the classroom, and to resume instruction with the same tried-and-true practices employed successfully in Area G. It should come as no surprise, then, that Mr. Archerd was later named as an LAUSD District Teacher of the Year by the Center for Advancement of Public Education. He then completed his illustrious career as the District K-12 Coordinator of Mathematics. In addition to his status as a Lifetime Achiever, he has twice received an outstanding achievement award from the Los Angeles Unified School District's Board of Education, and he has also been featured in Who's Who in America, a Marquis Who's Who publication.
