CLEMMONS, NC, April 11, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Eberhard Mueller-Heubach has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Eberhard Mueller-Heubach was born February 24, 1942 in Berlin (Germany). He received his medical degree from the University of Koeln (Cologne) in Germany in 1966. Following an internship at his alma mater he came to the United States in 1968 for an internship at Robert Wood Johnson Memorial Hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey. From 1969 to 1971 he was a National Institute of Health (NIH) research fellow in reproductive physiology in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University in New York doing basic research in fetal physiology using the pregnant rhesus monkey model. During this time he spent 10 months at the Laboratory of Perinatal Physiology of the National Institutes of Health in San Juan, Puerto Rico. From 1971 to 1974 he was a resident in obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center. In 1974-1975 he was selected as a chief resident in obstetrics and gynecology. In 1975 he joined the faculty in the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Pittsburgh - Magee Womens Hospital. He continued basic research in fetal physiology using the pregnant rhesus monkey as well as the pregnant sheep model. At the same time he did clinical research in obstetrics and in 1977 became one of the first obstetricians to be certified in maternal-fetal medicine at the beginning of the subspecialty. He also established the largest perinatal outreach program in the country involving 29 community hospitals. In 1989 he became the Frank R. Lock Professor and Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Reflecting his basic research background he established basic research in the department, a rarity among medical school ob/gyn departments. Within a decade the department rose from 63rd to 15th in National Institutes of Health research funding among US medical school departments of obstetrics and gynecology. It was one of five departments nationally that was part of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Unit Network as well as the Women's Reproductive Health Research program. The department ranked first in NIH research funding among 24 medical school ob/gyn departments in the Southeastern United States and fourth in NIH funding per faculty member nationally. He reorganized the residency program and was proud of the fact that none of the 65 residents he recruited ever failed the oral examination of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. From 1998-2000 he served as President of the Council of University Chairs in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CUCOG), the organization of medical school chairs in obstetrics and gynecology. From 1998 to 2001 he was a member of the editorial board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (the "Green Journal"), the most widely read journal in the specialty in the world. He was the first foreign medical graduate to serve in this capacity in the history of the journal. In 2002 at the age of 60 he stepped down as chair and continued as Frank R. Lock Professor until his retirement in 2007. In 2005-2006 he was President of the American Gynecological and Obstetrical Society (AGOS), the most prestigious and selective academic society in the specialty. AGOS is the successor society of the American Gynecological Society (AGS) founded in 1876 making it the oldest society in obstetrics and gynecology in the world. He also served for 23 years as an examiner for the oral examination of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He concluded his professional career in 2008 by giving the opening address at the meeting of the European Board and College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (EBCOG) in Lisbon, Portugal. During his retirement he indulged his passions for worldwide travel, the arts and horses and lived part of the year in Cologne (Germany).
