Drawing upon more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Hundahl is a distinguished international surgical oncologist and investigator specializing in gastric cancer. He has utilized his background in his role as the Chief of Surgery, Department of Veteran Affairs Northern California Health Care System since 2002. A renowned researcher and educator, Dr. Hundahl has also held the position of Professor of Clinical Surgery with UC Davis since 2002. He considers one of his greatest achievements to be research in computer-guided surgery for gastric cancer. Deeply committed to improving the quality and availability of health care across the country, Dr. Hundahl is also a co-founder of the largest home health care agency in Hawaii, as well as a member of a team developing the National Cancer Database.
Dr. Hundahl began his career upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry, magna cum laude, from Harvard University. He went on to pursue an MD, which he completed, cum laude, through the Yale University School of Medicine in 1981. During the next decade, Dr. Hundahl assisted the University of Hawaii Integrated Residency Program before joining the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to complete a fellowship in surgical oncology. Prior to his involvement with VA Northern California Health Care System and UC Davis, he served The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu as the chief of surgery. Additionally, Dr. Hundahl is a former chairman of the ACoS Commission on Cancer (1998-2000).
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Hundahl has authored more than 55 journal articles and 17 chapters detailing his findings as a surgeon and clinical research scientist. He is an editor of articles to professional journals, and previously served as the medical editor of the Journal of Registry Management from 2000 to 2008. From 1992 to 2002, Dr. Hundahl maintained involvement with the ACoS Commission on Cancer. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he has also held roles in a wide variety of medical organizations, including the Sacramento Surgical Society, Honolulu County Medical Society, Hawaii Medical Association, Hawaiian Surgical Association, Pacific Coast Surgical Association, Society of Surgical Oncology, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, Pan Pacific Surgical Association, and International Gastric Cancer Association.
In recognition of his countless contributions to medicine, science and research, Dr. Hundahl was named among the Best Doctors in America in 1995 and annually since that time. He has also been featured in several honors publications, including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West.
