SHREVEPORT, LA, April 14, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr Kenneth B. Jones Jr. has been selected for the perennial edition of Marquis' Who's Who. Since the 1990s, he has been recognized numerous times in many editions of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Science and Engineering, the South, the Southwest, America, and the World. Throughout his surgical career, he has frequently received recognition for his achievements in bariatric surgery, which include 20+ papers in peer-reviewed journals, several book chapters, and in 2008, the co-authorship of a major book in bariatric surgery, "Obesity Surgery: Principles and Practice". He has also delivered dozens of papers and lectures over a 30+year period, principally at the annual meetings of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) and The International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), both in the USA and abroad.
Following attaining a BS degree at Washington and Lee University, and an MD at Tulane, he returned to Shreveport for his Internship and surgical residency at LSUMC, briefly interrupted by two years in the US Air Force, during the Vietnam era. He then went to the U of Alabama, Birmingham Children's Hospital for a Fellowship in Pediatric Surgery, following which he returned to Shreveport to develop a surgical practice in General, Pediatric, and Bariatric Surgery, spanning a 36 year career, retiring in 2010. During that period of time, he served as the Chief of Staff at Christus Schumpert hospital in Shreveport, as well as the 16th president of The ASMBS. Following his Surgery residency, he was appointed Instructor in Surgery at LSUHSC-Shreveport, then was promoted to Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery in 1984, a position he held until his surgical retirement in 2010, moving to Emeritus status. He has been a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery since 1974 and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1976.
Just prior to his surgical retirement, he did some additional training and has since had a second career as a rural ER physician, championing this cause for retired MDs, especially surgeons, who still have a great deal more they can contribute in a myriad of small US towns where their knowledge and skills are sorely needed and appreciated.
Having had a hand in the development of some of the techniques of bariatric surgery, still very much in use today, he continues to review and critique papers for Obesity Surgery, the mouthpiece of IFSO, and to serve on its Editorial Board, as well as review papers for SOARD, the official ASMBS journal.
Dr Jones sincerely thanks The Who's Who board for the distinguished honor of being included as one of their special honorees. However, he feels that the greatest honor of his life has been a husband to his best friend, the father of three children, and a grandfather of seven, which joy and encouragement has contributed significantly to all the above.
