A lover of history, Mrs. Holmes demonstrates passion and professionalism as a museum director, preservationist and humanities educator in Israel. For the last 15 years, she and her husband have been sharing the rich history of the Jaffa American Colony at the Maine Friendship House Museum, located in Tel Aviv. The museum is a restored home originally built in 1866 by the Mark T. Wentworth family that had been brought over from Maine in the United States of America on the sailing vessel, the Nellie Chapin, along with 35 families. Historically, it was these 35 families that were the first American settlers on the land. Regarded as a "Friend of Israel" by the Ministry of Tourism for her work at the museum, Mrs. Holmes also presides over the non-profit organization Keshet haShalom and View-Pex Mondiale. She has worked as president and manager of the programs since the 1980s during which time she has been led to additional opportunities in her field. Notably, Mrs. Holmes was asked to speak at the International Holocaust Scholars Conference in Minneapolis, Minn., and the "Remembering for the Future II" conference in Berlin, Germany. In addition, Mrs. Holmes served as director and adjunct professor of student intercultural travel to Israel, Jordan and Egypt for Park University and Graceland University.
In recognition of her professional excellence in her career, Mrs. Holmes was the recipient of the "Maine Preservation Award" in 2004. Additionally, she was honored in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who of American Women. Prior to establishing the Maine Friendship House, Mrs. Holmes worked as a licensed construction supervisor in Massachusetts, a theology educator, a photographer, and a linguist. Her career is supported by her education, which includes an Associate of Arts from Graceland College, a Bachelor of Arts from Iowa State College and a Master of Arts in Judaic Studies from Hebrew College in Brookline, Mass. In addition, Mrs. Holmes has taken postgraduate coursework round the globe from prestigious institutions including the University of Paris, Tufts University, the Ratisbonne Monastery Hebrew University and Yad Vashem. As she looks to the future, Mrs. Holmes intends to continue sharing the history of the Jaffa American Colony to visitors of the museum while taking on new opportunities as they arise.
