Helen H. Gordon, EdD, Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    SANTA BARBARA, CA, May 09, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Helen H. Gordon, EdD, is being celebrated as a Marquis Who's Who biographee with a Lifetime Achievement Award. About Helen H. Gordon, EdD:
Dr. Gordon currently excels in her dual roles of President and Publisher of Anacade Publishing Company, specializing in educational books and games. She is a charter member of the Text and Academic Authors Association (TAA), active since 1996, participating in their conferences and newsletters. She is also a frequent contributor to the online searchable research site Academia.edu.

Previously, Helen served as an Editor and Technical Writer in the Department of Computer Engineering at UC Santa Barbara (1999-2006), Professor and Counselor (1974-1995), Articulation Coordinator (1992-1993) and Coordinator of Women's Studies (1977-1978) at Bakersfield College; Associate Professor and Counselor (1967-1974) and Chair of the Language Arts Division (1971-1974) at Porterville College (1967-1974); Teacher at Rio Americano High School in Sacramento (1965-1966) and as a 28-year-old sophomore, she worked as a part-time Instructor in Remedial English at The University of Utah (1960-1961). In tandem with these roles, Dr. Gordon spread her wings as Director of the English Council of California Two-Year Colleges for Region V from 1990 to 1992. Dr. Gordon served as the Founding President of Writers of Kern, established in 1993. She also served as a guest member of The Bakersfield Californian's editorial board.

As an author, Helen Heightsman Gordon has produced award-winning historical novels, text books, nonfiction on Shakespeare, nd educational games. These include "Malinalli of the Fifth Sun: The Slave Girl Who Changed the Fate of Mexico and Spain" (2011), "The Secret Love Story in Shakespeare's Sonnets, 2nd Edition" (2008), "Anagrams, Anagrabber and Other Word Games" (1999), "Love Lyrics in Light and Shadow" (1999), "Age is a Laughing Matter: How to Laugh Through the Second Half of Your Life" (1999), "Life, Love and Laughter" (1998); "Voice of the Vanquished: The Story of the Slave Marina and Hernan Cortes" (1995), "First Captured, Last Freed: Memoirs of a P.O.W. in World War II Guam and Japan" (1995) [for the latter, she edited the memoirs of her uncle, Edward Hale], "Interplay: Sentence Skills in Context" (1991), "Wordforms, Book I & II, 2nd Edition" (1990), "Developing College Writing" (1989) and "From Copying to Creating, 2nd Edition" (1983). Dr. Gordon has been associated with numerous academic, professional and civic organizations. She served as President (1997-1998) of the American Association of University Women, and was Founder, President and Program Chair of the Bakersfield Chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges. She is a life member of the National Education Association, California Teachers Association, and Faculty Association of California Community Colleges. She was President (2008-2011) of the Santa Barbara Chapter of Pi Lambda Theta, an educators' honor society. Other organizations that hold a special place in her heart include the National Council of Teachers of English, National Writers Union, Shakespeare Authorship Roundtable, Shakespeare Oxford Society, The Rosicrucian Order, and Supreme Grand Lodge of AMORC. She strongly supports the League of Women Voters; she served as President of its Bakersfield chapter from 1981-1983 and 1989-1990. She also maintains contact with Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

In recognition of her scholarly achievements, Dr. Gordon was honored with the Faculty Colloquium Award by Bakersfield College's Levan Center for the Humanities, in which she presented her research, "Sleuthing the Shakespeare Mysteries."

A State of California Certified Teacher and Licensed Counselor, Dr. Gordon holds an EdD from Nova Southeastern University, an MA in English literature, and BA in English with a minor in Education from CSU Sacramento. She also completed scholarship coursework in the Honors program at the University of Utah over a three-year period before moving to Sacramento.

She received a 1-year grant from the California Fund for Instruction to develop curriculum materials, and a 3-year grant for vocational programs when she was Articulation Coordinator (1993). Her innovative methods of teaching using controlled composition ("From Copying to Creating") and vocabulary building ("Wordforms: 5-at-a-time") became the focus of her well-received first three textbooks. She participated in many conferences presenting her innovations and teaching methods.

She has also been featured in a number of Marquis publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
