OTTAWA, ON, May 11, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph Stephen Stanford has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Joseph Stephen Stanford was born in Montreal, Quebec, on May 7, 1934, to Walter Albert and Geraldine O'Loghlin Stanford. He was educated at St. Leo's Academy, Westmount, Quebec and St. Mary's High School, Calgary, Alberta. He graduated from Loyola College of the University of Montreal in 1953 with a B.A. and from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, in 1956 with an LL.B. He articled and practiced law in Calgary from 1956 to 1960 with the firm of Greenan and Cooney.
Mr. Stanford entered the Canadian Foreign Service, Department of External Affairs, in 1960. He served at Canadian diplomatic missions in France, Jamaica and the Federal Republic of Germany. From 1979 to 1982 he served as Canadian Ambassador to Israel and concurrently Canadian High Commissioner to Cyprus. He then returned to Ottawa and served in a series of senior positions in the Department of External Affairs. He was appointed Associate Under Secretary of State for External Affairs in 1987.
In 1988 Mr. Stanford was appointed Deputy Minister in the federal ministry responsible for public security, the Ministry of the Solicitor General. He held that position until 1993, when he was appointed to the Canadian Centre for Management Development, the federal government's executive development agency, to establish a centre for training in negotiation and conflict management. He left the Canadian Public Service in 1994.
From 1994 to 2004 Mr. Stanford served as a Senior Consultant with Conflict Management Group (CMG) of Cambridge, Mass., a non-profit organization connected with the Harvard Negotiation Project, providing training and consulting services in negotiation and conflict resolution. He provided these services primarily in the public sector for Canadian and foreign governments, the World Bank, the World Health Organization, UNITAR and other international organizations, in Canada, the USA, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. He served on the teaching staff of the Program of Instruction for Lawyers at Harvard Law School and on the teaching staff of the negotiation program at the French Government's Ecole Nationale d'Administration in Strasbourg, France. Mr. Stanford was a member of the Board of Directors of CMG for six years and Chairman of the Board for two years.
He continued providing conflict resolution services as a consultant to private sector organizations in Canada and the USA until 2009.
Mr. Stanford married Agnes Mabelle Walker in Edmonton, Alberta, on November 16, 1957. The couple had three children: Kevin, Karen and Michael. Agnes Stanford died in Ottawa on December 2, 2011.
Mr. Stanford was called to Queen's Counsel in 1984. He has contributed to learned journals in the fields of conflict resolution, treaty law and international law relating to foreign investment. Mr. Stanford's recreational activities have included wilderness canoe camping, skiing and tennis.
