He started in the field as a researcher for Copenhagen Institute of Future Studies from 2003 until 2005, after which he transferred to Albert-Ludwigs University, Freiburg, to do research in modern philosophy. Upon leaving that position, Dr. Riis earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the institution. Prior to obtaining his most recent role, he worked for three years as an assistant professor of philosophy and science studies at Roskilde University. In addition to his experience in academia, Dr. Riis has also served on the scientific board of the Journal of Philosophy and Technology.
To help develop his field, Dr. Riis affiliates himself with the Danish Society of Philosophy, where he has served as vice president, as well as the Society for Social Studies of Science. Throughout his notable career, he has achieved much, including conducting research in the philosophy of technology.
