To prepare for his career, Dr. Tonn took his pre-dental studies at La Sierra University and the University of the Pacific, and received his DDS degree from the University of Southern California in 1955. He then served as Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, in the 6th Army Headquarters, at the Presidio of San Francisco, treating Nike Hercules Missilemen. Later, he took post-graduate studies at Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and the Long Island Jewish-Hillside Medical Center in New York, specializing in treating children with disabilities. Dr. Tonn is a licensed dentist in the State of California, a Life Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, a Fellow of the Academy of Forensic Sciences and the American Society of Forensic Odontology, a Fellow of the American College of Forensic Examiners, a Fellow of the International Association of Coronors and Medical Examiners, a Diplomate of the American Board of Special Care Dentistry, a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Dentistry, a Diplomate of the American Board for Certification in Homeland Security, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Quality Assurance. To remain at the top of his fields of interest, Dr. Tonn is also a Fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists, Rotary International and a Life Member of the American and California Dental Associations.
