Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Computer science is handily one of the greatest inventions humanity has ever conceived, and the discipline has Dr. Selman to thank for generations of new designers, programmers and innovators. Dr. Selman has spent more than four decades teaching, presenting, and researching in one of the most prolific periods of computer history. His specialty is computational complexity theory, a discipline that studies the very limits of what a particular computer system is capable of.

Dr. Selman was born in New York City, and studied at the City College of CUNY, earning a Bachelor of Science, cum laude, in mathematics. In 1964, he also earned a Master of Arts in mathematics at the University of California Berkeley. Dr. Selman taught at Pennsylvania State University before earning a PhD there in 1970, later going on to conduct postdoctoral research and lectures on computer science and mathematics at Carnegie-Mellon University. He went on to teach at Florida State University and Iowa State University, receiving the Fulbright Lectureship Award in 1981 to go as a visiting scientist to the department of computer science at Technion in Haifa, Israel. Dr. Selman continued to teach as a guest at FernUniversitat in Germany, and as acting dean of the college of computer science at Northeastern University. In 1990, he became professor and chair of the department of computer science at the University at Buffalo, where he would accept the honored post of professor emeritus in 2014.

Dr. Selman pioneered many of the complex mathematics used to analyze the degree of difficulty and available resources of any given computer system, and is often asked to mentor PhD students or invited as a guest speaker. He has authored numerous papers and articles in addition to serving as editor-in-chief for Theory of Computing Systems since 2001. He was a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Computer and System Sciences as well as the Chicago Journal of Theoretical Computer Science. Dr. Selman was the co-editor of "Complexity Theory Retrospective II," and co-authored "Computability and Complexity Theory" in 2011 with Steven Homer, and published by Springer.

Amongst notable honors, Dr. Selman has taken home the 2004 Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities from the State University of New York, the 2001 Distinguished Service Award from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Group for Automata and Computability Theory, and the 2002 Exceptional Scholar Award from the University of Buffalo.
