Born in Gorakhpur in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Dr. Mathur devoted over 50 years to physics and aerospace engineering in a career spanning several countries, engineering organizations, and academia until his retirement in 2012. His work took him not just across the planet but beyond, engineering the technology to take science into the solar system. Dr. Mathur's last position was as senior project engineer/systems manager at the Aerospace Corp, which provides support to U.S. satellite programs and NASA. Notably, he was part of the pioneering team to explore the planets Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology during the '80s.
In 1979, Dr. Mathur came to the United States as a freshly married man and member of the telecommunications science and engineering team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. After JPL, Dr. Mathur worked as a principal systems engineer for the applied technology division at Computer Sciences Corp. in Pasadena from 1992 to 1994, a senior staff engineer at Hughes Space and Communications in 1996, and as a senior staff engineer at Hughes Electronics/DirectTV from 1997 to 2000. In 2000, he joined Aerospace Corp as a senior engineering specialist. During his career, Dr. Mathur has contributed to numerous professional journals and served as an editorial board member with the Acta Ciencia Indica Journal from 1975 to 1978.
Dr. Mathur began his illustrious career at Agra University, which is now Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University in Uttar Pradesh and one of the oldest institutions in India. He earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree there, and lectured on upper atmospheric physics in Kanpur University until 1968. Dr. Mathur then took his first academic venture outside of India and became a doctoral researcher at the University of Southampton in Hampshire, England, where he earned a Ph.D. in 1974. During this time, he was also a postdoctoral research fellow at the Universite de Poitiers, France. In 1974, he returned to Kanpur University as an associate professor, where he taught until 1979.
As a testament to his longevity and success, Dr. Mathur was honored with the 10-Year Service Award from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech in 1990 and by Aerospace Corp. in 2010. Further, NASA presented him with the 1991 Group Achievement Award. He won the 1973 Delegation Generale A La Recherche Scientifique Et Technique Award, Paris, and the British Council, London, honored him with the 1968 Overseas Student Award. He is a lifetime member of IEEE, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (senior), The European Physical Society, and the California Institute of Technology Management Club.
In 1988, the International Biographical Center in Cambridge, England, recognized Dr. Mathur with a Certificate of Merit for Distinguished Services. He has been included in multiple volumes in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World. Dr. Mathur enjoys photography, reading, and still loves to travel. He has two children.
