Mr. Berall is a noted attorney and accredited estate planner based in Hartford, Connecticut, with 62 years of experience in the legal field. In his youth, he represented clients from prestigious firms in Connecticut and New York City, and is now a preeminent expert in probate and estate planning law. In 1929, Mr. Berall was born to Louis J. and Jeannette F. Berall in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Yale University in 1950, but left to serve in the U.S. Army in North Korea, earning the rank of first lieutenant. He served in combat with the 45th Infantry Division's 160th Field Artillery Battalion. In 1955, Mr. Berall earned a JD from Yale and was admitted to practice law in New York. He became an associate with Mudge, Stern, Baldwin, & Todd from 1955 to 1957 and then with Townley, Updike, Carter, & Rodgers from 1957 to 1960.
In 1960, Mr. Berall moved to Connecticut, passed the state's bar exam, and worked as an attorney for Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. In 1965, he joined the trust department of the Hartford National Bank & Trust Co. for three years. Thereafter he served as an associate with Cooney & Scully in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1970, Mr. Berall became a partner at his present firm of Copp & Berall, LLP.
As an accredited estate planner, Mr. Berall served as co-chair of the Notre Dame Estate Planning Institute from 1977 to 2009. He served on the advisory council of the Hartford Tax Institute and the board of directors of Bloomfield Interfaith Homes. The topic of estate planning has come up in his numerous lectures, from being assistant instructor at Yale University Law School to being a visiting lecturer at the University of Connecticut, the University of Hartford, and the American College of Life Insurance. Additionally, Mr. Berall is a prolific writer, contributing to "A Practitioners Guide to the Tax Reform Act of 1969," and the Journal of Taxation of Trusts and Estates. He has served on the editorial board of Estate Planning magazine since 1973, and is a senior editor of the Connecticut Bar Journal.
Mr. Berall has served in various civic roles over the years, and still acts as a director and former President of the Hartford Yale Club as well as a delegate to the Association of Yale Alumni. He served as vice president, secretary, and general counsel of John M. Blewer, Inc., and was a counselor to the Connecticut Governor's Strike Force for Full Employment, the State Tax Commissioner's Commission, the Connecticut Governor's Strike Force on Tax Reform, as well as the Committee on Tax Law Certification. From 2010 to 2014, he served as chair of the Federal Tax Institute of New England. He is a member of the American Bar Association, American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, the Hartford County Bar Association, the American Law Institute, the Connecticut Bar Association, the American College of Tax Counsel, the Culver Summer Schools Alumni Association, of which is was a former President, the Culver Club of Central New England and the Tax Club of Hartford.
In acknowledgment of his services in estate planning, Mr. Berall was named one of the top 50 Super Lawyers by Connecticut Magazine, and is the recipient of a Nathan Hale Award by the Yale Club of Hartford. He was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. Mr. Berall enjoys photography, history and philately.
