With a client list packed with Fortune 500 companies, the firm keeps Mr. Kende busy with multinational litigation, environmental law, and every aspect of pre-and-post-trial proceedings. Notably, Mr. Kende acts as counsel to numerous large French insurers and reinsurers, as well as shipping companies, marine and aviation insurers, and other French based marine and aviation interests.
Mr. Kende is a New York City native, born to Herbert Alexander and Helga Henrietta Kende in 1948. He attended Brown University to earn a BA and MA in 1970 before matriculating at New York University for a JD in 1973. From graduation to 1976, he worked with the Legal Aid Society of New York City as a staff attorney with the Appeals Bureau, providing appellate representation to indigent defendants in the New York City criminal justice system. In 1976, Mr. Kende became associated with the firm of Dewey, Ballantine, Bushby Palmer and Wood in their litigation department. He went on to Hill, Betts, & Nash in 1978. He served there as an associate until 1982, when he became partner of the firm, and in 1989, he joined Holtzman, Wise, & Shepard, where he worked for seven years as a partner. While at Hill, Betts and Holtzman Wise, Mr. Kende successfully prosecuted a $100 million claim on behalf of the French government against Amoco Corporation, arising from the massive shoreline oil spill from the Amoco Cadiz, off the coast of Brittany, France, in 1978. He also acted for Native village and regional corporations in Prince William Sound, following the Exxon Valdez oil spill in state and federal court in Alaska.
In 1996, Mr. Kende joined Cozen O'Connor as a Senior Member, where he has headed several prestigious and noteworthy cases, including representation of one of the largest French reinsurers in multi-million dollar disputes involving film finance insurance. Mr. Kende has provided reinsurance advice to federal agencies in connection with a worldwide terrorism insurance facility, acted for major carriers in asbestos and hazardous waste coverage actions, and has successfully represented numerous French insurers, reinsurers, shipping companies and air carriers in a multitude of disputes.
Mr. Kende has been recognized as a New York Super Lawyer by Thomson Reuters from 2006 onward in the area of insurance coverage. He is the author of numerous professional publications regarding maritime law, and has been admitted to practice in three states, Washington D.C., as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. The French National Depository Bank named Mr. Kende the recipient of their 1984 Silver Medal.
Over the course of a successful legal career, Mr. Kende has supported numerous organizations, including in a role as adjunct professor of maritime and admiralty law at Brooklyn Law School. He is affiliated with the American Bar Association, the New York County Lawyers Association, the Maritime Law Association, the French Maritime Law Association, and the Union Internationale des Avocats. He is currently President of the Insurance Law Commission of the UIA and on the UIA's Governing Board. In his social circles, he is a member of India House, Edgartown Yacht Club, the University Club of New York, the Travelers of Paris, and the Yacht Club de France. Mr. Kende belongs to the academic societies Phi Beta Kappa and the Order of the Coif. He has been selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and two volumes of Who's Who in American Education from 2006 to 2008. Mr. Kende loves sailing, motorcycling, tennis, animal-assisted therapy, and gardening.
