Mr. Lees is a retired writer and former magazine editor of such magazines as Popular Science, Cosmopolitan, and Family Handyman from the 1950s through the 1980s. He is also the author of numerous home improvement and automotive maintenance books. Mr. Lees is also a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force, having served from 1944 through the end of World War II.
Born in Kansas City, Kansas, to Alfred Whitaker and Blanche Lees in 1926, Mr. Les attended Stanford University to earn a Bachelor of Arts in 1950. He joined Home Craftsman magazine in 1953 as an editor and writer, briefly moving on to Family Handyman in 1960. From 1960 to 1962, Mr. Lees worked with Popular Science as an editor and writer, becoming senior editor before joining the rival publication Popular Mechanics in 1962. The magazines famously speculated on the technology of the day and their applications in the near future, accompanied by lavish illustrations.
In 1965, Mr. Lees was also featured as a home care columnist with Cosmopolitan magazine. In 1968, Mr. Lees moved back to a role as group editor of reader activities at Popular Science, a position he held until 1988. He has also served as director and a judge of the National Design Competition hosted by the American Plywood Association in Tacoma, Washington from 1976 to 1988.
Since the 1980s, Mr. Lees has contributed to home improvement literature as an author of books. Select titles include "67 Prizewinning Plywood Projects" in 1984, and "What's Wrong With My Car?" in 1990. For his first how-to book "Leisure Homes" in 1980--Mr. Lees coached a crew of architectural students in the construction of a unique pole house in the Poconos that was (in the late '70s) the most famous DIY home in America, featured in newspaper from coast to coast. Mr. Lees still spends his summers there. After retirement, Mr. Lees collaborated with Ronald Nelson on an anthology published in 1999 titled "Longtime Companions" which contributed to the marriage equality movement. Mr. Lees served as the president of the National Association of Home and Workshop Writers from 1990 until 1992, and is a member of the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance as well as the Traveler's Century Club, having visited 155 countries. Mr. Lees was selected for numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, and the 1998 to 1999 volume of Who's Who in Media and Communication. Mr. Lees is a hale nonagenarian, and still enjoys photography as well as traveling the world.
