He was inspired to become a doctor by his family, and though Dr. Bacon did not want to pursue his father's concentration of dentistry, the exposure ultimately set him on the path to medicine. In February of 2016, the University of Michigan honored his lifetime of service with the inaugural George E. Bacon Lecture.

Dr. Bacon regards two events in his life that he is proud of accomplishing and contributed to his success. One was being awarded a certificate of achievement for outstanding service to the U.S. Army from 1958 to 1961. The other was being accepted to Duke University, where he became a doctor of medicine in 1957. From those stellar beginnings, Dr. Bacon began his training in pediatrics at Duke Hospital and the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. In 1963 he become an instructor at the University of Michigan, where he would also go on to earn a Master of Science in pharmacology in 1967. It was the start of a remarkable period of service for the people of Ann Arbor.

Dr. Bacon became the chief of pediatric endocrinology at the University of Michigan in 1970, during a period when the university was expanding in specialization and gaining a more in-depth knowledge of pediatric care. The university recruited doctors in emerging disciplines like cardiology, neonatology, and of course, endocrinology. It was during this time that Dr. Bacon authored "A Practical Approach to Pediatric Endocrinology," which went on to become a much-referenced work in the field. He also served as a member of the senate assembly for the University of Michigan from 1978 to 1980 as well as vice chair for the director's advisory council from 1981 to 1982. When Dr. Bacon left Ann Arbor, it was as professor emeritus of the University of Michigan after 23 years of dedicated service.

In 1986, Dr. Bacon went on to become a department chair and professor of pediatrics at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas, also serving as chief of staff in pediatrics for Lubbock General Hospital. He also took on the post of chairman of the medical practice income plan in 1989. The positions lasted until 1990, when he accepted a double posting of medical director of pediatrics and director of medical education and research at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This position would also allow him to serve as a professor of pediatrics at Michigan State University. Dr. Bacon returned to Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan Hospital as a pediatric endocrinologist from 1995 to 2005, also serving at the Detroit Medical Center from 1996 to 2001.
