About David Stewart
With six decades of professional experience, Mr. Stewart brings extensive knowledge to his present role with Coreopsis Publications, LLC, where he has worked as owner, principal author, and general manager since 2004. He began his career with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in 1959. While in college, worked on the Atlas missile with Convair Astronautics as an associate engineer for hearing and thermodynamics design. Following his graduation, he joined General Dynamics Convair at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Test Annex and was lead engineer for checkout of the Atlas autopilot and battery systems, and a design designee for the Mercury Abort Sensing and Instrumentation System.
Following completion of the Atlas/Mercury program, Mr. Stewart left Convair for employment with General Precision in Little Falls, New Jersey, to develop a star acquisition and navigation system for missile guidance. When the government delayed the program, Mr. Stewart returned to Florida and became a member of the Martin Canaveral Titan/Gemini launch team. He took part in the launch of all twelve Gemini missions as a lead engineer for the Titan flight control and hydraulic systems. After the Gemini program completed, he stayed with Martin Marietta in the Orlando division. As a senior reliability and test engineer, he led a tiger team that solved problems on the Sprint anti-ICBM at the White Sands Missile Range and was partly responsible for the first successful launch.
When a fire killed three astronauts during tests of Apollo I, North American Aviation (later Rockwell Space Systems) asked Mr. Stewart and a few others to join the Saturn/Apollo test team and help put the Apollo program back on schedule. Mr. Stewart became a lead engineer for the Apollo Command & Service Module Stabilization & Control System, Integrated Guidance System, and Ordnance Systems. He stayed on with the Apollo/Saturn program at the Kennedy Space Center until the final Apollo/Soyuz flight in 1975. During that time, the NASA recognized him as an Apollo 15 launch honoree.
Upon completion of the Apollo program, Mr. Stewart stayed on with Rockwell Launch Operations as the principal engineer at the launch site for development of the Space Shuttle Avionics and Software systems. As Space Shuttle development gained momentum in 1978, Rockwell promoted Mr. Stewart to project manager, avionics integration, and assigned him responsibility for several integrated tasks, including shuttle flight software development, design reviews, shuttle simulated flight, and coordination with the integration laboratories. For the first Shuttle flight, Mr. Stewart was supervisor for the flight software development and operations.
Following the successful flight of STS-1, Mr. Stewart became Rockwell's project manager for the Shuttle Turnaround Enhancement Program, designed to lower the costs and turnaround time of shuttle missions. During his thirty-year tenure with Rockwell, Mr. Stewart served as Manager, Advanced Programs & Business Development, and Program Development Manager for Launch Operations. In the latter capacity, he worked directly with Kent Black, CEO of the United Space Alliance, to get NASA and Congressional approval for the joint venture between Rockwell and Lockheed that launched the rest of the Shuttle missions.
Mr. Stewart retired from Rockwell in 1996 and formed his own consulting firm, Business Development Consultants of Brevard, Inc. aka L&D Consulting. As a consultant, Mr. Stewart helped businesses, charities, and communities put together business plans, grants, and proposals. In 2003, President Bush and the Republican National Congressional Committee recognized him as Florida Businessperson of the Year. Mr. Stewart closed L&D Consulting in 2009 and started Coreopsis Publications, LLC in 2004. Since starting Coreopsis Publications, Mr. Stewart has written and published four novels: Psychic Redemption, Within the Wind, Serious Consequences, and Cabrera Landing; a memoir Seeking Success; and published several magazines and books written by others. During this period, Mr. Stewart served as president of the Space Coast Writers' Guild, and Chairperson of the Marine Resources Council of East Florida.
Mr. Stewart now owns, and is general manager of Coreopsis Publications, LLC located in Titusville, FL.
