Since 2010, Mr. Hirai is a distinguished professor emeritus of Tokyo City University and a renowned expert of analytical chemistry and nuclear chemistry, especially neutron activation analysis. His techniques have often been applied to cultural artifacts or metallurgical analysis of delicate objects. Mr. Hirai is the author of the scientific texts "Non-Destructive Examination of Cultural Objects" and "Trace Elements in Clinical Medicine" as well as the editor of "Basic of Chemical Analysis Helpful of the Site" and "Basic of Environmental Analysis Helpful of the Site" [sic].
Born in Osaka, Japan to Seiji and Mieko Hirai in 1945, Mr. Hirai studied engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Science in 1968. He joined the Musashi Institute of Technology as an assistant for one year before becoming a lecturer in 1975. In 2009, the university was renamed Tokyo City University, organized with numerous graduate programs in four campuses. Mr. Hirai stayed on for 36 years, and accepted the venerable position of professor emeritus in 2010.
Over a productive research career, Mr. Hirai has been the recipient of two honorary degrees, an MS in engineering and a DEng, both from the Tokyo Institute of Technology Graduate School. He has served as an advisor for the National Research Institute of Police Science in 2012, applying his analysis techniques to forensics. In the same year, Mr. Hirai served as a research supervisor to the Japan Science and Technology Agency, and he served as a specially appointed professor to Saga University in 2010. In 2007, he lectured as a visiting professor to Ehime University.
Mr. Hirai is a member of the Iron and Steel Institute of Japan, which honored him with the 2009 Asada Medal, as well as the Japan Society of Analytical Chemistry, where he served as vice president from 1999 to 2000, and which also honored him with an award in 2005. Mr. Hirai was selected for inclusion in the 2016 volume of Who's Who in the World. He is married to Kazuko Hirai, and they have three children, Etsu Suzuki, Mizuki Arita, and Kanae Hara.
