Dr. Hirawa is a teaching physician of internal medicine and director of the department of hemodialysis and apheresis at the Yokohama City University Medical Center. As of 2012, he is also the director of the education and residency program division as well as an associate professor of nephrology and hypertension. Dr. Hirawa's research focus is on general internal medicine including psychosomatic medicine, cardiovascular medicine, and renal medicine. In 2017, his research papers show an increased interest in renal replacement therapy in Asian countries.
A Yokohama native, Dr. Hirawa attended Yokohama City University and earned an MD in 1987. He was active in the medical field initially studying hypertension, and identified a key gene group with hypertension susceptibility, for which he holds a patent. In 1991, he earned a PhD at Yokohama City and went on to study the vascular complications of chronic kidney disease. He taught as an assistant professor for one year at the University of Tokyo before returning to his alma mater as a professor and clinical internist. Dr. Hirawa has served on many committees for the Japanese medical community on the subjects of hypertension, dialysis, endocrinology, apheresis, and nephrology.
As an international expert in internal medicine, Dr. Hirawa is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the Japanese Society of Hypertension, the American Heart Association, and the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine. He is the recipient of the 2017 Best Teacher Award from Yokohama City University and the 2006 Best Instructor Award by the management committee of the university's junior residency program. He has published research papers on numerous studies, covering many different conditions in the cardiac and renal systems. For his achievements in the field of medicine, Dr. Hirawa was selected for inclusion in two volumes of Who's Who in the World in 2011 and 2014. He enjoys travel.
