Dr. White is a respected professor at the Ohio State University in Columbus, where he taught science and mathematics education from 1969 to 2013. In 2014, Dr. White marked the culmination of 30 years service as a founding leader with the International Consortium of Research Science and Mathematics Education (ICRSME) improving the teaching and learning of science and math across the world. Since 1984, Dr. White has met with research teams in many countries to further international cooperation and an exchange of current teaching ideas and methods.
Born in Boulder, Colorado in 1936, Dr. White received a Bachelor of Science at Northern Colorado University in 1957, earned a certification in secondary science and mathematics by the State of Colorado, and went on to teach science at the Sheridan County Community Schools in Hoxie, Kansas until 1960. He served at the Fairview High School near Boulder, Colorado as a science teacher until 1968, when he earned a PhD from the University of Colorado. In 1969, Dr. White was received by Ohio State University as a professor, where he served for 44 years teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education.
Dr. White has contributed to numerous professional articles, and in 1983, he founded the ICRSME with the cooperation of the United States Information Agency. The Consortium's charter institutions included the University of Costa Rica, the University of the West Indies, the University of Panama, the National Pedagogical University of Mexico, and the American School in Puebla, Mexico. It has proved to be instrumental in numerous collaborative projects, and resulted in a number of educational texts including "Initiatives in Mathematics and Science Education with Global Implications," which was published in 2014.
During his tenure as a professor, Dr. White also served as the co-director of the National Center for Science Teaching and Learning from 1990 to 1996 in the office of education research and improvement. He has also served with the U.S. Information Agency as a consultant, and as an executive director for the National Association of Research Science Teaching. Dr. White is a member and former president of the School Science and Mathematics Association, which presented him with the 2009 Mallinson Distinguished Service Award. Dr. White was selected for inclusion in two volumes of Who's Who in America in 2015 and 2016.
