Mr. Wismar is a retired minister who served the parishioners of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Newtown, Connecticut for 24 years. He was selected as a 2000 grantee of the Lilly Endowment, one of the largest religious philanthropic support groups in the country, and has also served as an archivist, musical researcher, and inspirational author. In his retirement, Mr. Wismar contributes as a columnist as well as a travel and restaurant writer for the Heritage Villager.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey to Adolph Harold and Norma Adela Wismar, Mr. Wismar studied at Concordia Senior College in Indiana to earn a BA in 1967. He married Priscilla Emily Ames two years later, ultimately fathering Eric Andrew, Sarah Emily, Elizabeth Victoria, and Jessica Eve. He is a proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren. In 1971, Mr. Wismar earned a master's degree in divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis. He served briefly as a pastor for Immanuel Lutheran Church in Danbury, Connecticut before going on to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in nearby Naugatuck. In 1977, he received a Master of Science from Southern Connecticut State University, and one year later, he joined the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Maine as a pastor. Mr. Wismar went on to the Messiah Lutheran Church in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, from 1983 to 1987.
In 1987, Mr. Wismar became pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church and earned a doctorate in ministry in 1990 from Hartford Seminary. He served parishioners in Newtown until his retirement in 2011. Over the course of his career in ministry Mr. Wismar has been asked to visit as guest chaplain to the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and has served with the Newtown Family Life Center and the 5th District CT Congressional Advisory Board of Waterbury, Connecticut. In the '90s, he was at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Liturgy and Arts as a research fellow.
Mr. Wismar has also worked with the LCMS Lutheran Commission on Worship in Saint Louis and served as chairman 2004-2010. He has served as the church's archivist or Archives Committee member for the New England district since 1989. In the civic sphere, he has served as chair of the Lynnfield Arts Commission from 1985 to 1987 and vice president of the New England Lutheran Historical Society from 1999 to 2014. His published work includes choral texts "God is For Us" in 2010 and "At Every Turn" in 2013, in a prolific collection of writings that includes his first book, "A Parish Portrait" from 1990 and "Saints and Angels All Around" from 1993.
Mr. Wismar's work in the Lutheran ministry has been recognized with a 1987 NED Youth Commission Service Award and being named a Pastor Emeritus of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Newtown, CT. For his many years of spiritual service, he was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the World, the 2002 to 2003 volume of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and the 1992 to 1993 volume of Who's Who in Religion. Additionally, Mr. Wismar is the 2012 singles champion of the Heritage Village Tennis Open and the recipient of a 1988 Kodak International photography award.
