Mr. Olk has led a varied and stellar life as a librarian, researcher, educator, and public servant, serving from 1990 to 2016 as a tax examiner for Cook County Clerk's Office in Chicago. His day to day responsibility included delving into a labyrinth of records, and retrieving important government documents. He is also a certified notary public by the State of Illinois, a freelance paralegal in Chicago, and was made an admiral of the Nebraska Navy in 1982 by the landlocked state of Nebraska, an award that, albeit tongue in cheek, conveys honor and recognition for services to the "good life" of the state. It is one of several honors accrued by Mr. Olk during his storied career.
In 1952, Mr. Olk was born to James Howard and Bernice Helen Olk. He earned a degree from the Institute on Comparative Political & Economic Systems in 1973, and served for a time as an intern at the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. In 1976, he earned a B.S. in liberal arts, social science, and library science from the University of Wisconsin River Falls and accepted a post as a library assistant for three years in the UW System. Mr. Olk served as contract librarian at the U.S. Department of Justice in Oxford, Wisconsin, and as an editorial librarian for the Chicago Catholic newspaper starting in 1980. He was a columnist for Looking Back, Chicago Catholic from 1985 to 1989.
Furthermore, Mr. Olk offered his services to the Cicero Public Library as a library assistant and Lineage Search Associates as a researcher of genealogy, which is one of his hobbies. From 1981 to 1986, he served as vice president of New World Credit Union in Chicago. From 1988 to 2009, he served in an account management role at Glenbrook Security Services. In 1990, Mr. Olk accepted a position as tax examiner for Cook County, where he served for 26 years.
In addition to providing librarian services to the Catholic community of Chicago, Mr. Olk was a grand knight cardinal in Cardinal Council of the charitable fraternity Knights of Columbus from 2001 to 2003, and served as a delegate of the archdiocesan pastoral council. He is affiliated with the American Society of Notaries, the National Association of Investigative Specialists, the American Legion, the Amtrak Historical Society, the Chicago Genealogical Society, and the 20th Century R.R. Club. He was the honoree selected for choir performance at St. Peter's Basilica in 2001, 2013, and 2016, as well as 1997 recipient of the Legion of Merit from the Republican National Committee, 1995 International Citizen of the Year of the Principality of Hutt River, Australia, a colonel of the State of Alabama, an inductee of the Order of the Arrow in the Boy Scouts of America, and a frequent Employee of the Month at the Cook County Clerk's Office. He also served as SEIU Local 73 Union Steward 2012-2016 in the Cook County Clerk's Office.
Mr. Olk was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the World and the 1999 to 2000 volume of Who's Who in the Midwest. He enjoys rail travel, genealogy, reading, music, and philately, which is the study and collection of stamps.
