Mr. Sidebottom is a registered professional engineer in Missouri, and currently serves as a consultant as well as a managing partner of PPO Standards LLC after working for many years at Medtronic, Inc.
Born to Oscar H. and Goldia B. Sidebottom, Mr. Sidebottom studied for a BSEE from Iowa State University in Ames and worked as an industrial engineer before joining the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973. Upon his return, he returned to his previous employer Kansas City Power & Light Company as a systems planning engineer, working his way to manager of tech services in 1974. He later earned an MSEE from the University of Missouri in 1979.
In 1980, Mr. Sidebottom became manager of software systems at Medtronic Inc. in Minneapolis, where he began to build his specialization in medical electronics. He was promoted to engineering project manager in 1985, and joined the product planning team in 1987. By 1992, Mr. Sidebottom was manager of standards at Medtronic, and in 2000, he was made director of corporate standards. Mr. Sidebottom retired from Medtronic in 2014 and went on to establish PPO Standards LLC.
In a related role, Mr. Sidebottom has helped to maintain a high bar for medical equipment as secretary of the International Standards Organization Subcommittee on Osteosynthesis and Spinal Devices since 2007, as well as secretary for the International Electrotechnical Commission Subcommittee 62A since 1996. He has authored numerous articles on the topic of medical devices, as well as reference books such as "International Labeling Requirements for Medical Devices, Medical Equipment (AAMI), and Diagnostic Products." Mr. Sidebottom is affiliated with the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Standards Engineering Society, and the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, which awarded him their 2015 Leadership Award and the 2007 Standards Developer Award. He was named an Emeritus Member of AAMI in 2016. He has served in numerous roles, including current vice chairman, for ASTM International Committee F04, which awarded him their 2015 Merit Award, the 2009 Patrick Laing Award, and the 2005 Robert Fairer Award. Medtronic named Mr. Sidebottom a Medtronic Technical Fellow in 2011 in recognition of his years of dedicated service and ASTM International named him a Fellow of the society in 2015. Mr. Sidebottom served twelve years on the AAMI Board of Directors including two years as its chairman. He also served a three-year term on the ASTM International Board of Directors.
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) recently announced that Mr. Sidebottom has been selected as the 2017 recipient of the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. The award will be presented at the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day on October 19, 2017.
Additionally, Mr. Sidebottom has been named to the Order of the Knoll by Iowa State University of Science and Technology, where he has been active with the Iowa State University Alumni Association. He also devotes his time to the Spirit Hope United Methodist Church in Golden Valley, Minnesota. Mr. Sidebottom's civic circles include the Colonial Williamsburg Capital Society and the USE Inc. group. For his achievements in engineering and the medical field, Mr. Sidebottom was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, two volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 2011 and 2016, and the 2009 to 2010 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Business.
