Mr. Stein is an accomplished former colonel with the U.S. Air Force, an educator, celebrated writer, as well as a screenwriter. He is also a local personality, having announced events at the historic Field House pool at the University of Iowa for 34 years. As a pilot, he has flown in Vietnam and France, written four novels, and is a lifelong Hawkeye swimmer. Born to A.A. and Grace Stein, Mr. Stein studied at the University of Iowa to earn a Bachelor of Science in commerce and competed on the swim team. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1956 and in the space of a year, he attained the post of pilot in the 345th Squadron stationed at the Sewart Air Force Base in Tennessee. He was assigned to the Chateuroux air base in France from 1961 to 1964 as an instructor pilot with the 1602nd Wing. From 1964 to 1968, Mr. Stein made use of his time in the states by teaching at the University of Iowa as an assistant professor of aerospace studies, where he was awarded the 1968 Outstanding Faculty Award.

Mr. Stein also earned a degree with honors at the Academic Instructor School in the Air Force and a master's degree in counselor education from the University of Iowa before he joined the Tan Son Nhut air base in Vietnam as a line pilot in 1968. One year later, he was assigned to systems command at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. In 1972, Mr. Stein was reassigned to the North American aerospace defense command with the Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. Upon leaving the Air force in 1977, Mr. Stein had attained the rank of colonel, was decorated with the Bronze Star, and had earned a degree with honors from the Industrial College of Armed Forces in 1973.

In 1977, Mr. Stein returned to the University of Iowa and served as director of safety and security for the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics until 1985. He taught for five years in the writing division of Kirkwood Community College while producing four novels, including "Apollyon: A Novel," "The Black Samaritan," and "The Vengeance Equation." In 1988, he was honored with the International Literary Award for the short story "Death Defied." In 1994, he accepted a teaching position at the Johnson County Senior Citizens Center.

Mr. Stein is a member of the Writers Guild of America and, of course, the University of Iowa swim team, the Hawkeyes, also known as the Ironmen. He is affiliated with the Authors League of America, the Authors Guild, the Military Affairs Association, the National Iowa Lettermen's Club, the Daedalians, Phi Delta Kappa, and the National Iowa Varsity Club, where he has served as president since 2010. Previous to attaining that position, the Iowa Varsity Club presented Mr. Stein with their 1999 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2004 Letter Winner of the Year Award. He was named Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, and received the 2016 Distinguished Service Award from the University of Iowa, in addition to being named to the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002.

For his efforts in aviation, services to his country, and dedication to collegiate athletics, Mr. Stein was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, two volumes of Who's Who in American Education from 2006 to 2008, the 1998 to 1999 volume of Who's Who in Entertainment, and the 1999 to 2000 volume of Who's Who in the Midwest. He married Betty Lou Pavlik in 1955, and has three children, Robert Junior, David K., and Steven J. Mr. Stein enjoys flying, travel, reading, and swimming.
