Now retired, Ms. Buska is highly regarded for her three-decade tenure in the field of finance. She concluded her career in 2013 as an affiliated partner of Non Profit Management Solutions and chief financial officer of the Monarch School Project. Earlier roles that allowed her to come to prominence include financial manger of Dermagraft Joint Venture, senior accountant for Lois A. Brozey CPA and legal entity accountant for M/A-COM Government Systems. Other noteworthy roles held in Ms. Buska's career include secretary and treasurer for the Monarch Cafe, controller of the Monarch School Project, chief financial officer of the Soco-Lynch Corporation and senior accountant for the Peak Health Plan. In recognition of her professional excellence, she was named CFO of the Year for Small Non-profits by the San Diego Business Journal in 2011. In 1990 she was recognized as one of six CMA Profiles in Success by the National Association of Accountants and featured in the Journal of Accountancy and Management Accounting. In addition, she was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World and Who's Who of American Women.
Before establishing herself professionally, Ms. Buska prepared for her career by investing in her education. She earned an Associate of Arts from the University of San Diego in 1959 and a Bachelor of Science in accounting with distinction from San Diego State University in 1984. A certified management accountant and a certified public accountant in the state of California, Ms. Buska remained at the top of her field through her memberships with the Institute of Management Accountants, where she served in various roles over the years, including vice president of membership and marketing, director of certified management accountants, director of corporate development, director of membership acquisition, and treasurer.
Throughout her professional life, Ms. Buska has made her longtime passion of writing into a second career. Her poems have been published in the anthologies "Young America Sings" and "Sermons in Poetry." She is also the author of the books "Time Outs for Grown-ups: 5 Minute Smile-breaks" and "Paul's World: Trying to Fit in with Disabilities," which was published in 2016, and takes one into the mind and heart of Paul, who was born with cerebral palsy into a family of "normal" siblings. Ms. Buska's Smile-breaks columns are currently running bi-weekly in The East County Californian.
Additionally, Ms. Buska has served as a columnist for various print and online newspapers and magazines and has served as the chair of the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. Looking ahead, she intends to continue writing in her retirement while taking on new projects and opportunities as they arise.
