He currently practices in collaboration with Cerilman, Balin, Adler & Hyman LLP, and from his private practice in Melville, New York. Mr. Cummings has notably both prosecuted and defended claims in the areas of transactions, breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, misappropriation of trade secrets, breach of franchise, trademark infringement, and landlord-tenant disagreements. He draws a unique perspective from his experiences as a businessman, a service member in the U.S. Army Reserve, a student leader, and as an educator.
Mr. Cummings found natural talent as a leader from his undergraduate days with the U.S. Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps. He was honored with the Distinguished Military Student Award and the National Defense Preparedness Association Award. Originally, Mr. Cummings matriculated at Tulane University, but went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in applied economics from Hofstra University. While at Hofstra, Mr. Cummings was awarded a Distinguished Academic Scholarship, and served as editor-in-chief of the Hofstra Property Law Journal, legal research law fellow, and chair of the student admissions committee. Having served as president of the Trial Advocacy Club, Mr. Cummings also won the Phi Alpha Delta writing competition. While earning a MBA at the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School in 1996, he took on the role of president of the MBA Student Association, and the role of class representative of the Curriculum Advisory Board.
With such a stellar student record, Mr. Cummings went on to a position as an associate with the firm of Ronald J. Rosenberg in Garden City, New York. He served in the legal field as off counsel and contract attorney with Costa & Bersten until 1993, when he started a private practice in Patchogue, New York. At the same time, he began to teach with the Suffolk County Community College in Selden, New York. In 1994, he moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, and opened a legal practice. Mr. Cummings worked with a financial institutions group at the North Carolina Biotechnology Center from 1994-1995, which steered him towards financial pursuits. He accepted a position in 1999 with First Union Securities in Charlotte, North Carolina promoting and delivering financial products after graduation from UNC at Chapel Hill business school. While in North Carolina, he served as adjunct business instructor at Wake Technical Community College.
In 2000, Mr. Cummings returned to New York as a vice president with Hales & Co, where he handled insurance related mergers and performed financial analysis for mergers and acquisitions. One year later, he also began to serve as an adjunct professor of law at Hofstra University's Zarb School of Business, as well as an adjunct professor of the forensic exam at Touro College. Mr. Cummings returned to his own law practice in New York City in 2002, and from 2007 to 2010, he served as a general counsel with PFife Hudson Group. In 2010 he became of counsel with Certilman, Balin, Adler & Hyman LLP and was elevated to partner.
Mr. Cummings has been admitted to practice by the Bar in New York, North Carolina, the District of Columbia, the U.S. District Court of New York, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, the U.S. Court of Appeals, the U.S. Tax Court, the U.S. Supreme Court, and is a diplomate of the Board of Forensic Examiners. He has served as co-chair of the appellate practice committee of the Suffolk County Bar Association, and serves as a coordinator and lecturer at the Continuing Legal Education programs at the Suffolk Academy of Law. Mr. Cummings is an AV Preeminent Rated Attorney with Martindale-Hubbel, the top position in a peer-reviewed ranking.
Both Phi Eta Sigma and the college military honor society Scabbard and Blade count Mr. Cummings as a member in good standing. He has and continues to serve a variety of organizations, notably as associate editor of the Journal of Suffolk Academy Law, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Kenan-Flagler Business School Alumni Council, the Amistad Long Island Black Bar Association, Hope for Youth, Inc, and the New York State Society of CPAs. The Suffolk County Bar Association awarded him the 1991 Certificate of Distinguished Merit.
Mr. Cummings was featured by Long Island Pulse Magazine as one of the Top 2013 Legal Eagles, a rating of attorneys in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
