For 36 years, Ms. Hanratty has served the people of Texas as a pediatric nurse practitioner, meeting children on their worst days and putting them right again. During her nurse rotations, Ms. Hanratty was undecided about the specialties available to her until she helped treat a 9-year-old boy who had been put into traction with a broken leg. He threw spit balls at everyone, even Ms. Hanratty, and at that moment, she knew she wanted to work in pediatrics.
Ms. Hanratty grew up wanting to help people; she had always done well in the sciences, and her roommate, who was a nurse, urged her to follow the profession. In 1975, she earned a BSN from Russell Sage College, and after making her initial rotations, she received her postgraduate certification in pediatrics from the University of California, San Diego in 1980, and again from 2002 to 2004 at St. Joseph's College. Ms. Hanratty has also been certified by the American Nurses Association as a CPR instructor and neonatal advanced life support provider.
Ms. Hanratty took a position at the day surgery unit at the Children's Medical Center in Dallas serving as a pediatric nurse practitioner in 1981. She quickly demonstrated her abilities, and in 1985, she accepted a post as clinical manager of pediatrics at the Trinity Medical Center in Carrollton, Texas. Ms. Hanratty worked for some time as a representative for the nonprofit United Way, and in 1990, she found a post as part of a prenatal intervention team for substance abusing women and babies at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. She served as a drug coordinator until 1995, and in 1997, Ms. Hanratty transitioned to serving as a school nurse at Dallas Ind. School District.
From 1998 to 2008, she served as a pediatrics nurse in the Carroll Independent School District, the Agape Clinics of Texas, Healthcare Medical Associates, and Home Health Care. In 2008, Ms. Hanratty accepted a position in the clinic of Dr. Levy Pediatrics, and in 2012, she retired from nursing.
In addition to fundraising with United Way, Ms. Hanratty was also the chair of blood donation at Parkland Hospital from 1990 to 1997, chair at the March of Dimes from 1992 to 1997, and served on the board directors as a medical consultant to the KIDNET Foundation. She is affiliated with the American Red Cross, the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, and the Texas Nurses Association. She has been a frequent guest on television, notably the Morning Coffee talk show and KPLX-FM. For years of dedication to pediatrics, Ms. Hanratty was selected for
inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who of American Women, two volumes of Who's Who in American Nursing, the 1992 to 1993 volume of Who's Who Among Human Services Professionals, the 1997 to 1998 volume of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, and the 1993 to 1994 volume of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America. Ms. Hanratty has two children, and loves sewing and swimming.
