Mr. Peterson is a political science educator and administrator who worked across the country in a variety of institutions, from Universities to aviation foundations. From 1999 to 2002, he was named the Scott professor of leadership at Rocky Mountain College, and in 1969, he served as a consultant to the Novin Institute of Political Affairs in Iran. Mr. Peterson also served in Korea with the U.S. Marine Corps to the rank of captain. Until 2015, he taught American government at Yale and Stamford.
Born in Glyndon, Minnesota, to John M. and Hilda C. Peterson in 1926, Mr. Peterson attended Yale University and received an AB in 1947. He further earned an MSPA from the University of Southern California in 1949 and was conducting postgraduate work at the University of Chicago before he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1951. In the same year, he joined the Wisconsin State Legislature and served until 1955. From 1954 to 1960, he also served as an instructor of political science at the University of Wisconsin. Mr. Peterson earned a PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1962.
Mr. Peterson accepted a post as a professor of political science at the Ohio Wesleyan University before becoming president of the American Graduate School of International Management in Phoenix, where he served for four years. He returned to Ohio Wesleyan and taught until1980, when he became dean of special programs at Eckerd College in Florida. From 1984 to 1987, Mr. Peterson served as president of Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania. He was made director of the Academy of Senior Professors at Eckerd in 1987, and served through the early '90s, not long after the institution presented Mr. Peterson with an LLD in 1988.
Now an experienced administrator, Mr. Peterson became the president and CEO of the Center for the Study of the Presidency in 1997, leaving to teach at Rocky Mountain College in 1999. In 2002, he was elected to the Montana House of Representatives and also became president of the Thomas Wathen Foundation Academy in Riverside, California where aspiring pilots could learn the art of aviation. In his role as an aviation enthusiast, Mr. Peterson gradually befriended the general aviation icon Raymond Stits. When Mr. Stits died in 2017, Mr. Peterson was asked to write his biography.
In addition to teaching and writing, Mr. Peterson also founded the Center for International Business in LA, and is affiliated with the board of Arnold Industries, the Republican National Committee, and the Florida Association of Colleges and Universities. In his civic duty, Mr. Peterson is the president of the Home Owner's Association at his summer cottage in Warner Hot Springs, California. He has served with the Ohio Civil Rights Commission and the Ohio Ethics Commission. Mr. Peterson is notably affiliated with the American Political Science Association, the Judicature Society, the Society of Political Enquiries, the Academy of Political Science, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Rotary International.
Mr. Peterson was a 1960 Citizenship Clearing House National Fellow, and received the 1977 Citation for Excellence by Sigma Phi Epsilon and the 1979 Marshall Award for Ohio Wesleyan Students. He is charitably affiliated with the United Church of Christ. For a lifetime of practice in political science, Mr. Peterson was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, three volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, two volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business, and the 1995 to 1996 volume of Who's Who in the South and Southwest. He enjoys sailing, flying, music, writes books, and has four children.
