Since 1964, Dr. Rothstein has worked towards understanding the relationship between the health of a society and the health of the individual bodies within it. As professor emeritus of the honors University of Maryland, Baltimore County, he has taught generations of students and written papers on the social history of medicine, the medical profession and medical education, occupations and professions, as well as large-scale organizations. Dr. Rothstein's published research is collected in such books as "Readings in American Health Care" and "American Physicians in the 19th Century."
Born in Waterbury, Connecticut, Dr. Rothstein attended the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1959. In 1961, he matriculated at the University of Minnesota to earn a Master of Arts. After receiving a PhD from Cornell University, he worked as a research analyst for Prudential Insurance in Newark, New Jersey, gaining insight in the inner workings of the health care industry in America. Dr. Rothstein joined the University of Maryland Baltimore County in 1966, rising through the ranks to become professor in 1988 and serving until 2013, when he accepted his current, venerable position.
While teaching sociology, Dr. Rothstein also conducted research into the way health care is approached in the U.S. In his 2003 book, "Public Health and the Risk Factor," he outlines how the concept of the "risk factor" came about and its effect on the way healthcare is managed. The first part of the book explains how statistics contributed to the concept in the first place, while the second suggests that this concept reinterpreted coronary heart disease as a public health risk, with the subsequent rise in recommendations for lifestyle changes as medical treatment.
Dr. Rothstein is a member of the American Association for the History of Medicine. For his contributions to medical history and sociology, he was selected for inclusion in six volumes of Who's Who in America from 2011 to 2016, and the 1997 to 1998 volume of Who's Who in the East. Dr. Rothstein also enjoys music, especially playing the flute and the recorder.
