Dr. Kim is the present research and development head of Welgene Research and Development Institute in Gyeongsan city, and a career biotechnology executive. He holds dual doctorates in biology and life sciences, and leads Welgene in the fields of stemcell biotechnology, proteomics, immune cell biotechnology, and molecular anti-aging, promising fields on the frontier of medicine and bioengineering. Dr. Kim is the recipient of the 2014 75th IR52 Jang Young-Shil Award and the First Technology Innovation Award from the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology.
Born in Busan in 1965, Dr. Kim studied with the National Fisheries University of Busan before earning a Master's degree from the graduate school of Busan National University. He went on to earn a PhD with their department of biology before working on a second doctorate with the University of Liverpool Medical School in the HACB department of the school of life sciences. Dr. Kim initially worked with Goam Genetics Institute with Kittolife in Busan, and in 2009, he went on to become research and development head with Prostemics Instiute in Seongnam, Republic of Korea.
In 2011, he accepted a position with Ozlibio in the capital of Seoul, and in 2013, Dr. Kim joined Stemmedicine/Stemmedicare as chief research and development advisor. He served for one year as managing director and laboratory head of the advanced cell lab in Aribio Company before accepting his current position with Welgene.
Dr. Kim holds a number of patents in the field of stem cell research, including adult mesenchymal stem cells for anti-aging, implantable co-polymers for tissue engineering, anti-inflammatory ginsenosides from Korea Hongsam, cartilage regeneration scaffolding, and adipose-derived stemcells for cosmetic applications. He is a member of the Korean Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Society and the Korean Society of Molecular and Cellular Biology. For his advances in a vital field of biotechnology, Dr. Kim was selected for inclusion in the 2016 volume of Who's Who in the World. He enjoys hiking, and is a skateboard enthusiast.
