Dr. Lee is a research professor of chemistry at Keimyung University in Korea, having taught there since 1991. He has conducted research on an incredible assortment of chemical applications, including fire retardant polyester fabrics, fire resistant rubber, fluorosensor fiber optics research with the support of the Korean Academic Science Foundation, means of detecting noxious fumes, and automotive catalytic converters. Dr. Lee's expertise is in the chemistry of catalysts, materials processing, and analysis, with numerous patents in the field. He is currently developing nanocomposites for lithium ion batteries, bimetallic catalysts for batteries, and the development of carbon nanofibers for automotive materials.
Born to Sang-Kook Lee and Youn-Sook Won in Youngweol, Republic of Korea, in 1957, Dr. Lee studied physical chemistry at Kyungpook National University, earning a Bachelor of Science in 1979 and a Master of Science in 1981. From 1983 to 1985, Dr. Lee served to the rank of first lieutenant with the Third Military of Republic of Korea in Young-Cheon City as an instructor of chemistry, and was certified in the treatment of hazardous materials of the first grade by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea. He was decorated as an Outstanding Professor and with a 1985 Teaching Award, both from the Third Military. He went on to earn the 1990 Christensen Award from Oregon State University, where he completed a PhD in 1991.
Dr. Lee joined Keimyung University in that year, where he earned numerous awards for academic excellence in teaching and research. Notably, he received the 2016 BISA Academic Award and the 2012 to 2013 Industry-Academy Outstanding Research Professor award from Keimyung. Dr. Lee is the recipient of a 2017 Outstanding Scholar Award from the International Association of Advanced Materials, presented in March.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Lee served as head of the Nano Materials and Processing Research Institute at Keimyung from 2005 to 2006, and as secretary general of the Research Institute of Traditional Microorganism Resources from 2004 to 2005. He has also served as editor for the Korean Vacuum Society, the Korean Society of Analytical Sciences, and Analytical Sciences and Technology. Dr. Lee currently contributes as an editor to Advances in Chemical and Biological Engineering and the International Journal of Materials Science and Application. He has led the Korean Chemical Society as director and inspector, and served from 2015 to 2016 as chair of the Daegu-Kyungpook chapter of the organization.
Dr. Lee is a member of numerous scientific groups, notably the American Vacuum Society, the American Chemical Society, the Korean Electrochemical Society, and the Materials Research Society. For innovations in chemistry, he was selected for inclusion in the 2016 volume of Who's Who in the World.
