Having practiced law since 1976, Mr. Russell is the chairman of the business services group at the law firm of Harrison & Moberly in Indianapolis. Instrumental in the '80s and '90s for forging many business relationships between Indiana and Asia, Mr. Russell has found professional success by drawing from varied experiences prior to his legal career. In fact, the mayor of Indianapolis declared January 15, 2002, to be David Williams Russell Day in recognition of his legal services to the business community. That same year, Indiana's Governor named Mr. Russell a Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest leadership recognition awarded by an Indiana Governor.
Mr. Russell attended Dartmouth College, where he was a Daniel Webster National Scholar, earning his A.B. in 1967 and his M.B.A. from Dartmouth's Tuck School in 1969. In 1967, after a summer teaching English at Talladega College, a leading black college in Alabama, Mr. Russell began teaching mathematics at Lyndon Institute in Vermont. In 1969, as one of the first M.B.A. Administrative Fellows selected by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation, he was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Tougaloo College, a prominent black college in Mississippi, where his work stimulated a front page article in The Wall Street Journal.. In 1973, Mr. Russell entered Northwestern University School of Law, earning his J.D. cum laude in 1976.
Having clerked during law school with the Philadelphia law firm Montgomery, McCracken, Walker & Rhoads Mr. Russell began his legal career at Winston & Strawn in Chicago where he worked from 1976 to 1983. In 1983, Mr. Russell became a partner at Klineman, Rose, Wolf & Wallack in Indianapolis, where he continued his many years of service to the community and the legal profession. In 1987, he became a founding partner at Johnson, Smith, Pence, Densborn, Wright & Heath, and in 1999, he became a partner at Bose, McKinney & Evans. In 2004, he joined Harrison & Moberly, where he currently is a partner leading a business services team handling transactions, financings, technologies law, marketing law, real estate law and international business matters.
Mr. Russell has had an indelible presence with the business community over the years, notably being selected as part of the U.S. Department of Justice delegation to the U.S. China Joint Session on Trade, Investment, and Economic Law in Beijing. He was a leader at the 1987 Industrial Products Trade Fair in Kawachinagano, Japan, and a lecturer on law at the Indiana governor's trade mission to Japan in 1996. He has served as a leader of many business, trade, cultural and international organizations, including, African University Foundation, Outdoor Youth Exploration Academy, Asian Services of Indiana, the World Trade Club of Indiana, Carmel Sister Cities, Indiana Swiss Foundation, the Writer's Center of Indiana, Asian American Alliance, the Indianapolis Peace Games, the Indiana Soviet Trade Consortium, and served Dartmouth College as its Indiana District Enrollment Director for ten years. Mr. Russell also is a prolific author on business, legal and international legal matters, having published over 70 articles on such topics, and currently serves as the author of the annual supplements to Indiana Business Organizations, a 4-volume legal treatise published by West Publishing, the leading U.S. legal publishing house.
Mr. Russell's memberships and affiliations include the American Bar Association, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Dartmouth Lawyers Association, the Indianapolis Association of Chinese Americans, the Chinese Music Society, University Club of Indianapolis, Zeta Psi, and Friends of Taiwan Association. He is the current chair of the Indiana District Export Council and advises a number of universities, boards and graduate schools concerning business, legal and international trade matters. Mr. Russell is a frequent guest speaker on radio, television, and at various civic, business, and educational organizations.
For his legal service, international renown and devotion to Indianapolis, Mr. Russell was named an Indianapolis Super Lawyer by Indianapolis Monthly and Law and Politics magazines. He was declared Global Business Person of the Year and Sagamore of the Wabash in 2002 by the governor of Indiana.
