Dr. Geyman is a family physician, U.S. veteran, and distinguished professor emeritus of the University of Washington. He dedicated 47 years to the profession of medicine, whether serving California's hospitals as a general practitioner, healing from his private practice, or leading both students and peers in the pursuit of medical science. Dr. Geyman's inspiration to become a doctor was an ardent desire to work with people and to make a difference in the world. He currently works to make a difference in his home of Friday Harbor.

In 1931, Dr. Geyman was born in Santa Barbara, California to Milton John and Betsy Payne Geyman. He initially attended Princeton University studying geology, earning an AB in 1952. Dr. Geyman served with the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1955 with the rank of lieutenant, junior grade. When he returned to academia, it was to become a doctor at the University of California in San Francisco, earning an MD in 1960. Dr. Geyman is a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice. He served a rotating internship at Los Angeles County General Hospital, as well as a residency at Sonoma County Hospital. In 1963, he established a private practice in Mount Shasta, CA, and went on to become director of the family practice residency at Community Hospital of Sonoma County, Santa Rosa, CA.

In 1971, Dr. Geyman began to teach, joining the faculty at the University of Utah as an associate professor of family practice and the chair of the Division of Family Practice. He went on to the University of California, Davis for five years as a professor, and arrived at the University of Washington in late 1976. He served as professor and chairman of the Department of Family Medicine from 1976 to 1990, and as professor emeritus since 1993.

In 1972, Dr. Geyman was recognized as a charter fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, and he has been a charter member of the American Board of Family Practice since 1971. He is notably affiliated with the National Academy of Medicine at the National Academy of Sciences, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was honored with the Dr. Quentin Young Health Activist Award by Physicians for a National Health Program in 2008, the 1998 Alumnus of the Year Award by the University of California School of Medicine, and received the 1960 Gold-Headed Cane Award, among others.

Over the course of his academic career, Dr. Geyman has published many insightful pieces on the topic of family medicine, as well as larger healthcare concerns. His recent work includes "Health Care Wars: How Market Ideology and Corporate Power Are Killing Americans," Souls on a Walk: An Enduring Love Story Unbroken by Alzheimer's," "How Obamacare Is Unsustainable: Why We Need a Single Payer Solution for All Americans, "The Human Face of ObamaCare: Promises vs. Reality and What Comes Next," "Crisis in U.S. Health Care: Corporate Power vs. the Common Good" and "Common Sense about Health Care Reform in America." His books are widely available in ebook and paperback formats. Dr. Geyman was the founding editor of The Journal of Family Practice from 1973 to 1990, when he became editor of the Journal of the American Board of Family Practice until 2003.

For a lifetime devoted to family medicine, Dr. Geyman was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and two volumes of Who's Who in American Education from 2006 to 2008. He enjoys the company of his three adult sons, and is an accomplished pilot. Dr. Geyman is a member of the United Flying Octogenarians, and devotes his spare time to flying cancer patients from San Juan Island to and from the mainland for cancer treatments.
