An illustrious figure in his industry with an incredible 52 years of career experience to his name, Mr. Athas is an accomplished lawyer with a focus on corporate law. He devoted most of his career to service in administration and as general counsel, and oversaw legal responsibility for both domestic and off-shore entities. As such, he is an expert (and a key negotiator) on both publicly traded and private companies' mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, financing of manufacturing companies and investments. Essentially, Mr. Athas is an integral part of every deal, every Board Meeting, and every major decision, providing both legal guidance and excellent business judgment. Mr. Athas is a veteran of the U.S. Army, and, is currently with the law firm of Stamos & Trucco LLP.
Mr. Athas was born in Chicago to James G. and Pauline (Parhas) Athas. He is married (1964) to Marilyn (Carres) Athas. In 1958, he earned a BS (majors in accounting and economics) from the University of Illinois. Following his graduation, he entered military service - U.S. Army, 1958-1962. With the rank of First Lieutenant, included among his assignments was Tank Platoon Leader in South Korea).
He returned to academia and earned a JD (cum laude) from Loyola University in Chicago. He contributed legal articles to the Illinois Bar Journal. Mr. Athas was admitted to the bar in Illinois in 1965, and, began working with Isham, Lincoln & Beale. In 1969, he joined a firm client-conglomerate ITT Corporation (1969-1987), where he held the positions of Group General Counsel, Midwest Regional Counsel, and ITT Assistant Secretary. He handled a wide variety of legal matters for a large number of corporate entities that were in a variety of businesses with significant business activities in Europe, South America and Asia.
From 1987 to 2000, Mr. Athas held the following assignments within related entities: Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary-Eagle Industries Inc.; Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Secretary-Great American Management and Investment, Inc.; and Executive Vice President Administration, General Counsel, and Secretary- Falcon Building Products, Inc., a New York Stock Exchange entity. Each of these entities has a substantial number of subsidiaries conducting a wide variety of businesses participating in both domestic and international business activities. The ultimate combination and sale of these entities was an incredible success. He feels his success is due largely to his time with these companies, and, is pleased and gratified to have served there. Mr. Athas joined Stamos & Trucco in 2000.
He is a member of the American Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association. For Mr. Athas' achievements in the field of corporate law, he was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and three volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business from 2006 to 2010.
