From 1992 to 1995, he served as chair and professor of politics in the Department of Politics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Earlier in his career, he was an associate professor of political science at Boston University, a position he held for almost 10 years. Before that, he was an assistant professor of government at Wesleyan University. He was also a faculty member at Columbia University in 1975, John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York in 1974, and New York University in 1974.
Dr. Markovits has been affiliated with multiple institutions, holding professorships, fellowships, and distinguished visiting professor and scholar positions at universities around the world. He held the position of Sir Peter Ustinov Professor at the University of Vienna in 2010. He was a visiting professor at Webster University in Vienna, Austria in 2008; Dortmund University in 2006, Hebrew University in 2005; St. Gallen (Switzerland) University in 2004; Harvard University from 2002 to 2003; Bochum University in 1991; Osnabruck University in 1987; and Tel Aviv University in 1986. In 1996, he held the position of Fulbright Professor at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. He was a research associate at multiple institutions, including, but not limited to, the International Institute of Comparative Social Research at the Science Center of Berlin in 1980; Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaftliches Institut at the German Trade Union Federation, Dusseldorf, Germany in 1979; the Institute of Advanced Studies in Vienna from 1973 to 1974; and at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University from 1975 to 1999.
In 2007, Dr. Markovits was bestowed with an honorary doctorate from Leuphana Universitat in Luneburg, Germany. He completed his undergraduate and graduate career at Columbia University, receiving a PhD in political science in 1976, a Master of Philosophy in 1974, a Master of Arts in political science in 1973, and a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. He also received a master's degree in business administration from the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University in 1971. Some of his memberships include the American Political Science Association, the International Political Science Association, the American Association of University Professors, the American Sociological Association, and the American Historical Association.

Dr. Markovits founded the journal German Politics and Society at the Center for European Studies at Harvard University in 1983 and remained its editor until 2003 launching it into one of the leading scholarly publications on modern Germany in the English-speaking world. Additionally, he is a TV and radio commentator in the United States and Europe on topics as varied as German politics, social movements, social democracy, anti-Americanism, and modern sports culture.
In 2012, Dr. Markovits received the Cross of the Order of Merit, First Class, the highest civilian honor awarded by the Federal Republic of Germany. He has also won numerous awards for exceptional teaching, including the Tronstein Award from the University of Michigan in both 2007 and 2016, the Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1997, and the Golden Apple Award for Best Teacher from the University of Michigan in 2007. Just a few of the fellowships awarded to Dr. Markovits include those from the Institute of Advanced Study in Berlin, the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University, the B'nai B'rith Foundation, the Kalmus Foundation, the Hans Boeckler Foundation, and he was he was also a President's fellow at Columbia University.
