Ms. Kalin is the owner and art teacher at Portraits of Life in Kansas City, Missouri where she teaches painting to students of all ages from professionals to beginners, many of whom have never held a brush. Drawing from her experiences as a professional artist of 65 years, she produces paintings in oils, alkyds, acrylics, watercolor, and kalin media, and has been featured in a plethora of contemporary magazines and exhibitions. Ms. Kalin is one of only 22 artists ever awarded the Permanent Signature Certification by the American Portrait Society.
Ms. Kalin has been painting since the age of nine, during her childhood in 1930s Kansas City. She was born to William Warner and Esther Dorothy Johnson in 1932, and attended St. Joseph Junior College to earn an AA in 1951. Her artistic prowess earned her a full merit scholarship to attend the Kansas City Art Institute from 1951 to 1952, and she studied with both celebrated pastel artist Daniel E. Greene and New York City oil painter Gregg Kreutz. In 1952, she married John Baptist Kalin and ultimately had three daughters, Jean Loraine, Debra Ann, and Diana Yvonne.
From 1952 to 1953 and then again from 1973 to 1993, Ms. Kalin produced many fine works of art for Hallmark Cards Incorporated as a senior process artist in the company's graphic division. As one of the first proficient senior process artist with the company, she was able to work on plates, cups and wrapping paper, the latter becoming her particular specialty. From 1953 to 1972, she also offered her services as a freelance artist, and in 1986, she established Portraits of Life in Kansas City. She continues to show her work at galleries and in competitions all over the U.S. and was featured in the fifth and sixth volumes of the "Artistic Touch" hardcover art book series in 2014. Ms. Kalin has been featured in a plethora of artwork publications, notably "Splash" # 5, # 12, #14 as well as two new books by North Light, "Best of Worldwide Watermedia" from Kennedy Publishing, the "Best of Watercolor" series from Rockport Publishing, the Artists' Magazine, "Art Journey Animals," "Acrylic Works 5," scheduled for publication in 2018, and numerous magazines published by American Artist. She was a finalist in the summer 2005 Cover Competition from Watercolor Magazine. Notable domestic venues that have hosted Ms. Kalin's Art include the American Watercolor International in New York, the Rockies West National exhibition in Colorado, the Governor's Mansion Special Exhibition in Jefferson City, Missouri, the San Diego Watercolor Society, Audubon Artists, the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic, and the Red River Watercolor Society in Fargo, North Dakota. She was also featured at the Winston Churchill Museum in Fulton, Missouri, and has illustrated numerous materials for artistic societies, notably the Directory of American Portrait Artists. She is a signature member of the National Oil and Acrylic Painter's Society, the International Society of Acrylic Painters, the Transparent Watercolor Society of America, the Kansas Watercolor Society, the Illinois Watercolor Society and the Missouri Watercolor Society.
Ms. Kalin has been recognized as a master by the Western Colorado Watercolor Society, the Missouri Watercolor Society, and the NAPA Archives in the Tate Museum of London, England. For her prolific body of still life, portraiture, and art spanning every facet of America, Ms. Kalin was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, Who's Who of American Women, the 2004 to 2005 volume of Who's Who in American Education, and the 1999 to 2000 volume of Who's Who in the Midwest.
