Mr. Beem dedicated many years to the practice of law, particularly with the law firm of Baker & McKenzie. He is also well known as a collector of Japanese contemporary prints. His collection includes nearly three hundred prints from the 1960s to the present. He met several of the print artists of the period. His photograph is featured in a work by the noted artist Tetsuya Noda. That print is now a part of his collection. Mr. Noda was just one of the artists encouraged by and represented in Mr. Beem's impressive collection. Forty of his prints were loaned to the Art Institute of Chicago for an exhibit on the occasion of the opening of the new Japanese galleries.
Mr. Beem was born in Chicago in 1931, and spent his childhood living through World War II. He matriculated at the University of Chicago, earning an AB with honors in 1952 and a JD in l955. In Law School he was an editor of the Law Review. He worked as an associate of the Chicago law firm of Wilson & McIlvaine until 1963 when he joined the international law firm of Baker & McKenzie. In 1964 he was asked to help open the Tokyo office of the firm. For six years he headed the Tokyo office working with his Japanese colleagues in assisting companies doing business in Japan.
Upon returning to the Chicago office of Baker & McKenzie, Mr. Beem advised many companies on the legal issues concerning their investments in countries outside the United States. He retained ties with Japan serving as an advisor on economic matters to the Consulate General of Japan at Chicago. After serving forty years as a partner of Baker & McKenzie, Mr. Beem retired in 2004.
As an American fostering relationships in postwar Japan, Mr. Beem became a member of many notable institutions including the Tokyo Club and the Tokyo American Club. He was also a member of the Chicago Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the American Law Institute and the American Foreign Law Association. He is a member of the University Club of Chicago, the Sons of the American Revolution, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Delta Phi. He served as president of the Japan America Society of Chicago and is Chairman of the Board of Governors. He is also a director of the Asian Art Council of the Art Institute of Chicago. Mr. Beem was decorated with the Order of the Sacred Treasure, Gold Rays with Rosette, by the Emperor of Japan. He was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the Midwest, Who's Who in the World, and the 2016 volume of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
