A life diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, Dr. Cavanagh has been excelling in the field of eye care for more than five decades. Today, he demonstrates his expertise as professor emeritus at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Previously, he came to prominence as a resident in ophthalmology and intern at Johns Hopkins Hospital between 1965 and 1973. Other noteworthy roles held in Dr. Cavanagh's career include medical director and associate dean of clinical services at Zale Lipsky University Hospital, distinguished university professor and vice chairman of the ophthalmology department at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, professor at Georgetown University, F. Phinizy Calhoun professor of ophthalmology and department chair for Emory University and assistant professor at Harvard University Medical School. In recognition of his professional excellence, Dr. Cavanagh was the recipient of a Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement by the British Contact Lens Association, a senior science investigators award from Research to Prevent Blindness Inc., and the 35th Castroviejo Gold Medal, among others. In addition, he was selected for inclusion into Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the South and Southwest and Who's Who in the World.
Before establishing himself professionally, Dr. Cavanagh prepared for his career by investing in his education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1962 and a MD in 1965 as a Joseph Collins scholar from Johns Hopkins University. In 1972, he achieved a Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University. To stay at the top of his field, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the International College of Surgeons, the Royal Microscopy Society, and the American Academy of Optometry. Additionally, Dr. Cavanagh maintains affiliation with the Eye Bank Association of America, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the New England Ophthalmology Society. To share his expertise with other health care professionals, Dr. Cavanagh has taken on career opportunities outside of his profession to increase his impact on his industry. He has served as a visiting professor for Georgetown University, a consultant and chairman of visual sciences for the National Institutes of Health, a science advisory panel member of the National Society for the Prevention of Blindness and editor-in-chief of the journal Cornea. As he looks to the future, Dr. Cavanagh intends to continue contributing to the field of eye medicine while taking on new projects and opportunities as they arise.
