Admitted to the Bar of West Virginia in 1966, Mr. Surface blended his love for banking with law shortly after completing a Bachelor's degree cum laude and JD cum laude at Washington and Lee University. Accepting his first position as an associate attorney for Spilman, Thomas, Battle and Klostermeyer in 1965, Mr. Surface spent six years at the firm learning the tools of the trade. Moving in another direction, he became a trust officer for Kanawha Valley Bank.
Well on his way to a successful and rewarding career, Mr. Surface was also vice president and trust counsel for Liberty National Bank and Trust Company and vice president and trust officer for United Virginia Bank. By the mid-1980s, Mr. Surface relocated to Dyersburg, Tennessee, where he became the next vice president and senior trust officer for First Citizens National Bank for several years before transitioning into the role of senior vice president and senior trust officer for SunTrust Bank of East Tennessee in Johnson City.
Officially retiring from the industry in 2003, Mr. Surface always made time out of his busy schedule to serve his community. He was a member of the administrative board for the First United Methodist Church of Dyersburg, was president and board of directors for Community Concert Association, and served as treasurer and board of directors for Louisville-Jefferson County Youth Orchestra in Louisville, to name a few. He also contributed his time as an active member of the American Bar Association, the West Virginia Bar Association, the Tennessee Bankers Association, the West Virginia Bankers Association, Tennessee State University Friends of Music, and his local rotary. He held numerous titles on many of these organizations as well.
Married to Judith Marcia Woodford, deceased, for over 51 years, and shared two children and two grandchildren. He loves to play tennis and racquetball, read, and do photography. In recognition of Mr. Surface's accomplishments, he has been listed in nearly 20 editions of Who's Who over the past 25 years.
