Otolaryngologists like the prolific Dr. Chang are often referred to as ear, nose and throat (ENT) physicians, treating the sinuses, larynx, mouth, and related structures in the neck and face. The field is quite expansive, covering everything from allergies to reconstructive surgery, like Dr. Chang himself, who continually volunteers as an international humanitarian doctor and attends education courses to stay informed in his field. Notably, he has also taken courses in endoscopic surgery of the sinuses, Eustachian tube and ear with Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, healthcare and medical policies with Korean Medical Association, and disaster relief with Korean foundation for international healthcare. He attended the first and second international medical conversation course from the Korean Human Resource Development Institute for Health and Welfare in 2013. That background propelled him to become as a clinical professor at Soonchunhyang University Hospital and Korea University Anam Hospital.
Dr. Chang grew up in a physicians' family, with the exception of his mother, Sung-Ja Kim, who cared for them all. His father, Dr. Dae-Soo Chang, held doctorates in urology medicine and philosophy and served as Vice-Chancellor of Chosun University and Chief of the Chosun University Hospital twice. Dr. Chang is the oldest of four brothers, the others being Dr. Jong-Ho Chang, a gynecologist, Dr. In-Ho Chang, a urologist, and Jun-Ho Chang, a pharmacist. The eldest brother matriculated with the Soonchunhyang University to become certified in otolaryngology with the Republic of Korea. His master degree thesis was directed by Dr. Hyuck-Soon Chang, and the younger Dr. Chang wrote his dissertation on tonsillar squamous carcinoma, with the guidance of Dr. Byung-Don Lee. He entered the Korean military as a medical officer, serving to the rank of captain at the Sorokdo National Hospital and the Gyeonggi-do Medical Center, PAJU Hospital, after serving his internship and residency with Soonchunhyang University Hospital.
Dr. Chang has served several ENT clinics, notably in Kimpo, Seoul, and Sejong in Republic of Korea. He became a volunteer doctor with Seoul Seongbuk Medical Association to Vietnam in 2006, and joined the Asia Peace Medical Service Trip to China in 2009. In 2009, he organized the Sunhan Volunteer Society with Dr. Han-Sung Park(president) and served as secretary general. The Sunhan Volunteer Society is an organization that provides overseas medical services to the 16 countries and veterans who helped the Korean War in return for their favor. In 2010, he joined the Sunhan Volunteer Society Medical Team in Ethiopia, and in the same year, he traveled with the Haiti Earthquake Korean Disaster Relief Medical Team to offer humanitarian assistance. In 2011, he returned to Ethiopia, and in 2012, 2013, 2016, and 2017, he joined medical mission to the Philippines as part of the Sunhan Volunteer Society Medical Team.
Dr. Chang has received numerous letters of appreciation from the mayor of San Pedro in Laguna, the Philippines, from the provincial government of Cavite in the Philippines, from the East Asia Future Foundation Volunteer Society, from the Korean Foundation for International Healthcare, and others. He was presented with a 2015 Shimmian Research Award by the Korean Society of Otorhinolaryngologic Clinicians, a 2013 Association Commendation for Sunhan Volunteer's Society, the 12th Hanmi Cham Award for Medical Service from the Seoul Medical Association, and a 2012 Merit Plaque from the Seoul Medical Association, just a few of many awards granted for selfless medical service and scientific innovation. Along with other scholars, Dr. Chang has contributed his extensive knowledge to publications on such topics as allergic rhinitis classification (DANYOUNG classification), highly pathogenic infectious diseases (especially H1N1 Influenza Type A virus), Eolsorilogy (DANYOUNG HUNMINJEONGEUM, Korean language research).
Dr. Chang continually seeks to improve himself, recently attending international courses with the Korean Human Resource Development Institute for Health & Welfare, the Korean Medical Association, and training with the disaster relief team of the Korean Foundation for International Healthcare. He has been a leader with numerous medical societies, notably as the current vice chairman of the Sejong Medical Association, and as an member of Infectious Disease Committee, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Chang is a member of an incredible number of societies, notably the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and the American Rhinologic Society.
Of particular importance to Dr. Chang is his membership with the Catholic Church, Myeong-dong Cathedral, where he made his first holy communion on November 24, 1979. His Christian name is Macarius.
