She has immersed herself in the extracurricular and administrative aspects of education, ascending through the ranks from high school teacher to principal, and ultimately becoming an influential member of the educational system.
Ms. Petry earned a bachelor's degree from Louisiana College in 1971 and a Master of Education from McNeese State University in 1984. Her first post was in Jefferson Davis Parish, where she worked as a junior high teacher until 1973, moving on to teach high school in St. Tammany Parish and Jefferson Parish. In 1981, she arrived at Crowley Junior High School, where she taught language arts and acted as a writing assessment coordinator, chair of the spelling bee, and co-chair of the Crowley Junior High School Southern Association. She was named Crowley Junior High Teacher of the Year in 1985.
During this time, Ms. Petry took an interest in administrative education by serving in the Teacher Evaluation Revision Panels I, III, and IV, as well as the Principal's Evaluation State Committee, offering a teacher's insight into the Louisiana education system. She served as a member of the 1984-1990 Louisiana Governor-Elect's Education Transition Team, the Louisiana Goals 2000 steering committee on school governance and accountability, and the school financial commission. Ms. Petry served on the state selection committee for the Louisiana Teacher of the Year and Students of the Year awards, and worked as a master teacher assessor for the Louisiana State Department of Education for one year before returning to teaching in Crowley Middle School from 1991 to 1995. A year later, she became the assistant principal at Rayne High School, and from 2001 to 2004, served as principal before retiring from administration to serve as adjunct instructor at Louisiana State University Eunice.
Ms. Petry is a member of the Louisiana Retired Teachers' Association and the Lafayette Association for Retarded Citizens. She has served in multiple roles for the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana, including state president from 1992 to 1994 and state executive director from 1995 to 1996. She has been recognized as a state leadership scholar by Delta Kappa Gamma, a professional honor society for key women educators around the world, and served as chapter president from 1988 to 1990. Ms. Petry has been included in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who of American Women, as well as the 1993-1994 edition of Who's Who in Emerging Leaders in America, and the 1997-1998 edition of Who's Who in the South and Southwest for her leadership in education.
