Even as a child of 12, Dr. Day dreamed of becoming a writer, a poet, and a scientist, which all came true over an incredible lifetime of achievements. She is the author of "Married at Fourteen," the true story of Dr. Day's early years as a teen mother. Despite a turbulent start, Dr. Day's enthusiasm for academics led her through a stellar career as a science writer, a children's health researcher at the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute, and founder of her own small press, Scarlet Tanager Books in Oakland, where she now serves as director. Dr. Day is now a celebrated poet and author in her own right, with many volumes of poetry collected and available from booksellers.
Dr. Day is an Oakland native, born to Richard Allen Lang and Evelyn Marietta Lang in 1947. In her memoir, which won the 2013 Pen Oakland Josephine Miles Literary Award, she writes about looking for a husband from an early age as a way of reaching for her adulthood. At the age of 15 she had a daughter, Liana Sherrine, with Frank Lawrence Day, whom she legally married in both 1962 and 1965 and divorced for the final time in 1970. "... The author went from teenage wild child and biker chick to prize-winning poet and holder of four advanced degrees," said author Cyra McFadden in a testimonial for "Married at Fourteen."
As a teenage mother, Dr. Day worked in a variety of jobs that rekindled her love of academics, and she went on to earn an AB in biological science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1971. She worked with the university as a teaching and research assistant, and with the support of a graduate fellowship from the National Science Foundation from 1972 to 1975, earned an MA in zoology in 1973. In 1977 she accepted a position with the Magic Mountain School in Berkeley as a science teacher. Two years later she earned a PhD in science and mathematics education and joined the Novato Unified School District in California as a specialist in math and science. Two years after that, she became a technical writer and editor with Schlage Electronics, concurrent with a position as a science instructor at Project Bridge in Laney College of Oakland.
In 1986, Dr. Day was welcomed as a science writer and manager of precollegiate education programs in the Public Information Department at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where she worked for four years. In 1990, she transitioned to coordinating the life sciences staff at the laboratory, and two years later she became manager of the Hall of Health at the Children's Hospital and Research Center Oakland. In 1999, she received an MA in English from San Francisco State University and launched Scarlet Tanager Books in Oakland. In 2004, she received an MFA in creative writing, coinciding with a promotion to director of the Hall of Health.
Dr. Day took on the role of staff scientist at the Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute from 2010 to 2012. Her research is compiled in numerous articles, as well as "Science Exploration Excitement and Knowledge: A Curriculum in Health and Biomedical Science for Diverse Fourth and Fifth Grade Students," which she edited in 2010. Additionally, she co-authored "How to Encourage Girls in Math and Science: Strategies for Parents and Educators" in 1982 with Joan Skolnick and Carol Langbort.
Dr. Day has won numerous prizes for her literary and poetic pursuits, including the 2014 Blue Light Poetry Prize and the 1982 Joseph Henry Jackson Award in Literature from The San Francisco Foundation. Scarlet Tanager Books showcases West Coast writers of poetry, fiction, literary history, and literary criticism. Dr. Day's poetry collections include "Becoming an Ancestor" in 2015 and "The Curvature of Blue" in 2009, both from Cervena Barva, and she has written a children's book titled "Chain Letter" published in 2005 by Heyday. Dr. Day often pulls inspiration for her work from her background of British, Swiss, German, and Native American ancestors, many of whom led rich, colorful lives.
