Dr. Ren holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Software, a Master of Engineering in Image Processing, and a Doctorate of Engineering in Computer Vision, all from Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU) in Xi'an, China, as well as a PhD in Electronic Media and Communications from the University of Bradford in the UK.
A Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at the University of Strathclyde, Dr. Ren is with the Center for Signal and Imaging Processing in the university's Department of Electronic and Electrical engineering. Prior to joining the University of Strathclyde in 2010, he served in various research positions in UK at the University of Bradford, the University of Surrey, Kingston University, and the University of Abertay. He also spent ten years as a Teaching Assistant and then promoted to Lecturer and Associate Professor at NWPU in the earlier part of his career.
An image processing and computer vision researcher whose interests include visual computing, content-based image/video analysis and understanding, machine learning, hyperspectral imaging, big data fusion/analytics, and visual surveillance, to name a few, Dr. Ren's work has been supported by various organizations, including the European Union, Natural Environment Research Council, Innovate UK, Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as industrial partners and internal funding. Known as an associate editor for several international journals, Journal of the Franklin Institute, Multidimensional Systems and Signal Processing, International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence, and Big Data Analytics, Dr. Ren's experience includes having published more than 160 peer-reviewed research papers in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences. He has also served as a guest editor for several other journals, a reviewer for dozens of others, and an organizer/co-organiser for several international conferences and workshops.
An active member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers since 2007 and a Fellow of the High Education Academy since 2012, Dr. Ren is the recipient of many awards throughout his career, including seven scientific advancement awards granted by the Chinese government between the years of 1994 and 2003, along with three best student papers/poster awards and a best PhD Thesis Award from IET Image/Vision Section for his PhD students. He was also named to the 10th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
