Based in Honolulu, Dr. Brady has served as a physician at Straub since 1984, and provides healthcare with a specialty in internal medicine when not broadcasting televised medical advice as a popular host. Additionally, he has taught at the school of medicine at the University of Hawaii since 2003, and is a celebrated member of the community of Honolulu. The Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce awarded Dr. Brady the 2015 O'o Award, and he was named 2002 Physician of the Year by the Honolulu County Medical Society.
Dr. Brady was born to Richard Harris and Jeanne Margaret Brady in 1955 in New London, Connecticut. He attended Harvard University to receive an AB, cum laude, in 1977 and left chilly New England to earn an MPH from the University of Hawaii in 1978. Dr. Brady conducted postgraduate work there before earning an MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1982. He returned to the University of Hawaii as an intern, then a resident, transitioning to clinical instructor at the school of medicine in 1986 and working there until 1999.
In 1984, Dr. Brady became a physician with Straub Clinic and Hospital concurrent with his academic role. Dr. Brady has also served as a physician with Kaiser Clinics, the Kokua Kalihi Valley nonprofit health center, and the Waianae Coast Health Service, all based in Hawaii. From 1989 to 1995, he served as medical director and physician with American Hawaii Cruises. In 2003, Dr. Brady was appointed associate professor and vice chair of the department of native Hawaiian health at the University of Hawaii, and from 2009 to 2011, he served as interim chair of the department. He has contributed to the Hawaii Journal of Medicine and Public Health since 2005.
Dr. Brady has been prolific in his civic pursuits, especially around Honolulu. He has co-hosted a popular KHON morning news segment titled "Ask the Doctor" since 1996, and hosted the television series "Health in Paradise" as well as "UH on Call" in the 2000s. He is a noted editor of the Hawaii Journal of Medicine and Public Health and led the Boy Scouts of America as a Cubmaster in Kailua, Hawaii, from 1995 to 2000, for which he was presented the 2008 Eagle Scout Award, the 2000 Cubmaster Award, and the 1999 Cub Scouter Award.
Dr. Brady is also the recipient of the 2010 and 1999 Guy Milnor Awards for community service by Stroub, Scot of The Year by the Caledonian Society of Hawaii, the 1995 Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International, the 2013 Distinguished Achievers Award from the St. Louis School Gallery, and was named 2008 Grand Marshall of the Prince Kuhio Parade in Honolulu. Institutions that have granted Dr. Brady research funding include the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Pacific Research Institute in Honolulu, and the Kuakini Medical Research Institute in Honolulu. For his achievements in medicine, Dr. Brady was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the World, two volumes of Who's Who in the West from 1998 to 2001, and two volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Industry from 2001 to 2003. Dr. Brady enjoys singing, scuba diving, and music, and has one daughter. He has also served as a commander with the U.S. Merchant Marine since 1989.
