Born in the city of Mexico in Missouri to Wendell Edward and Dorothy Irene Koerner in 1938, Mr. Koerner studied at the University of Kansas to earn a BS in Industrial Management in 1960, and earned a JD from the University of Missouri in 1968. He joined the law firm of Brown, Douglas and Brown in St. Joseph and became a partner in four years, serving until 1998. In 1999, Mr. Koerner went on to the firm of Franke, Schultz and Mullen, where he served for 10 years. In 2009, he built on his reputation for representing clients in personal injury, medical malpractice, alternative dispute resolution, workers' compensation, and other civil legal matters to establish Koerner Law Firm.
Having devoted so many years to St. Joseph, Mr. Koerner has supported numerous local groups as a volunteer legal counsel, notably with the YWCA and as a temple attorney with the Moila Shrine Temple. He is a member of the Disciples of Christ, and has served with the board of directors for the Ecumenical Corporation for Housing Opportunity from 1997 to 2007. In the '70s, Mr. Koerner volunteered in the probation and parole group with the Missouri Bar. He is additionally affiliated with the American College of Trial Lawyers, the International Association of Defense Counsel, and the American Board of Trial Advocates. He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1960 to September 1965.
Mr. Koerner served as president of the St. Joseph Bar Association in 1985 as well as the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers in 1995. He was recognized for excellence with memberships in the Order of the Coif, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Masons, and the Shriners.
In honor of his legal achievements in the state of Missouri, Mr. Koerner was presented with a 2006 Lawyer of the Year Ben Ely Junior Award by the Missouri Organization of Defense Lawyers, as well as the 1973 Lon O. Hocker Memorial Trial Lawyer Award by the Missouri Bar Foundation. He was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and the 2009 volume of Who's Who in the World. Mr. Koerner married Mary Jo Maday in 1973. He has three step-children: Jennifer, John and Greg, and a daughter, Ryan. He enjoys golf and fishing.
