Joseph Mailen Kootsey, PhD Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

Originally a student of physics, Dr. Kootsey has dedicated his multifaceted career of 52 years to multidisciplinary research, and has made remarkable achievements in physiology, pharmacokinetics, biophysics, computer science, and engineering. He has served for many years as a noted professor of Loma Linda University in California, and provided incredible research work in the field of computer simulations for physiology and biomedical applications. Since he retired from teaching in 2005, Dr. Kootsey has been involved in global entrepreneurial projects, and serves as director of Provitus Proton Therapy Cancer Centres in Australia, the chief technology officer of Alexandros Incorporated, and president of Simulation Resources, Incorporated.

Born in Houston in 1939 to Joseph Steven and Esther Irene Kootsey, Dr. Kootsey studied with Pacific Union College before moving on to postgraduate studies in physics with Brown University. He earned a PhD in 1966, and began a long teaching career at Loma Linda University, an Adventist institution that allowed Dr. Kootsey to pursue numerous fields of research. Beginning in 1971, Dr. Kootsey occupied teaching positions at Andrews University in Michigan and Duke University in North Carolina, very much in demand for his prolific command of numerous disciplines. Dr. Kootsey returned to Loma Linda from 1998 to 2002 to head the physiology and pharmaceutical department, and stayed on as a professor. From 2002 to 2005, he became director of university information systems concurrently with a position as director of the computer biology facility.

Dr. Kootsey's incredible schedule is due to his amazing profusion of research, which includes mathematical modeling, medical process, development of software, and international consulting. He holds joint patents in respiration testing systems as well as building interactive calculations in web pages. The firm of Simulation Resources provides computer counseling for biomedical systems, using simulations to make sense of daunting mountains of data. Dr. Kootsey has developed software for research in ion transport theory and the regulation of heart muscle cells. At Provitus, he provides cutting edge proton therapy for specific types of cancers that do not respond as well to conventional radiation. Alexandros Incorporated takes its name from Alexander the Great, and combines humanitarian efforts in health care and education with developing energy needs around the world.

Dr. Kootsey has also consulted with the Albert L. Chaney Medical Laboratory, the Jones Medical Instrument Company, the American Edwards Laboratories, Hoffman-La Roche in Switzerland, and Health Canada on health risk assessment and toxicology. From 1983 to 1990, he served as director of the National Biomedical Simulation Resource. Dr. Kootsey has provided editorial services to the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers on biomedical engineering, served as physiology section editor for Doody Press from 2000 to 2005, and has been an editor with Simulation Journal since 1985. Additionally, he has reviewed a plethora of articles for the American Journal of Physiology, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. He has served with the board of Health Hyperlink Incorporated and Nanolife Sciences, and is still a director with Transformation International and Adventist Today.

Dr. Kootsey has also received numerous grants and contracts to further scientific research, notably from the National Institutes of Health, the National Medical Testbed, and the Duke University Medical Center. He is fully versed in a number of programming languages, and is a competent administrator and frequent presenter at international conferences.

For contributions to a profusion of scientific endeavors, Dr. Kootsey was selected for inclusion in the 2000 volume of Who's Who in the World, the 1988 to 1989 volume of Who's Who in the South and Southwest, the 1996 to 1997 volume of Who's Who in the Midwest, the 2000 to 2001 volume of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 2002 to 2003 volume of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. He is married to Lynne Diane Kootsey, and has two sons, Brenden Lamont Kootsey and Sean Alexander Kootsey. Dr. Kootsey enjoys tennis and playing the piano. He is an Adventist, and taught as a professor of religion at Loma Linda the year before his retirement. His blogs and published editorials often address the role of a scientist as a Christian, and strove to preserve the best parts of both.
