He worked with the investment firm Clark Estates for 44 years, accruing numerous honorary degrees for his financial acumen. From 1990 to 2000, Mr. Stack led the prestigious legacy company as its president, chief operating officer, and director of the board in New York City.
Born in 1935 to Edward Henry and Helen Margaret Stack in Rockville Centre, New York, Mr. Stack studied at Pace University in New York City to earn a BBA in 1956. He joined Clark Estates Incorporated fresh out of college and was placed in the accounting department. Mr. Stack ascended through the company from the position of corporate cashier to chief operating officer, a role he held until his retirement in 2000. At Clark, he helped to establish the Clark Foundation Scholarship Program to provide scholarships for graduating high school seniors in and around Cooperstown, New York. The scholarships formed a part of the roughly $6 million dollars of charitable grants presented by the Clark Foundation in 1985, according to the New York Times.
Mr. Stack also served for a time as chairman and director of the Baseball Hall of Fame, director of the Farmers' Museum, as well as president of the Leatherstocking Corporation, all in Cooperstown. He is an avid supporter of the Clara Welch Thanksgiving Home in Cooperstown.
Mr. Stack's philanthropic efforts grew steadily in the '70s, and in 1973, he was named trustee of the Mary Imogene Basset Hospital. He joined the New York State Historical Association in Cooperstown as a trustee from 1975 to 2002. In 1982, he received his first honorary LLD from Hartwick College, where he is an emeritus trustee, followed with an honorary degree from his alma mater Pace University as well as an honorary degree from Long Island University in 1994.
Mr. Stack is a board member of the Mental Health Association of Nassau County, the Salvation Army of Greater New York and of Nassau County, and the SCO Family of Services in Glen Cove, New York. Additionally, he is a trustee of the New York State Trooper Foundation and the United Methodist Church of Sea Cliff, New York. Mr. Stack is an honorary director of the United Methodist City Society of New York City, and maintains membership with the Mohican Club in Cooperstown, NY.
