Dr. Barker is an ordained, retired minister of the United Church of Christ, a religious educator, and a theologian who contributed significant publications to the new relationship between science and religion in the '80s and '90s. He served as secretary to the ministry of higher education at the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries in New York for 35 years and produced articles on moral discourse, creationism's role with the church and public education, as well as health and human values. Dr. Barker retired in 1996 and resides in the Mile High City.
Born in Auburn, Nebraska to Jack Lloyd and Olive Clara Barker in 1931, Dr. Barker sought academic elucidation from Doane College, earning an AB in 1952. He taught history and served as a chaplain for Doane College before studying theology at Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Divinity in 1956. In that year he was ordained as a minister at the United Church of Christ, and served as a pastor at the University of Nebraska from 1956 to 1959.
Dr. Barker received a Master of Sacred Theology from Yale in 1960, and conducted postgraduate work with the University of Chicago before being welcomed by the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries within the United Church of Christ in 1961. Nine years later, Dr. Barker completed a PhD from St. Louis University, and in 1977, he earned a Doctor of Divinity from his alma mater, Doane College. From 1971 to 1977, Dr. Barker also served in the post of president for the United Ministries in Higher Education in New York. He is president emeritus of the World Student Christian Federation Trustees.
Dr. Barker has retrieved numerous insights for the faithful coming to terms with scientific developments. He is the notable author of "Creationism, the Church and Public Education" in 1981, moving on to "Science, Technology and the Christian Faith" in 1990. Dr. Barker contributed to "Campus Ministry," released in 1964, as well as "Religious Colleges in America" in 1988 and "The New Faith-Science Debate" in 1989. He served with the editorial advisory committee of the Journal of Current Social Issues.
In addition to spiritual considerations, Dr. Barker has worked to better the people on Earth as a member of the American Civil Liberties Union, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the National Association for Science, Technology and Society, the Society of Health and Human Values, the American Academy of Political and Social Science, the Academy of Political Science, the American Studies Association, and the American Association for Higher Education. He has served as president of the Doane College Alumni Association and belongs to the Yale Club in New York City.
For his achievements in the field of theology and many years service in the ministry, Dr. Barker was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, two volumes of Who's Who in the Midwest, the 1992 to 1997 volume of Who's Who in Religion, and the 2000 to 2001 volume of Who's Who in the West. He was also selected by the John Templeton Foundation as an honoree in volumes of Who's Who in Science & Technology and Who's Who in Theology & Science.
