Dr. O'Handley obtained a Bachelor of Arts from St. Louis University in 1968. In 1972, he graduated with a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Missouri and began interning at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center. He completed his residency in family practice as first chief resident at St. John's Mercy Medical Center in 1975. Dr. O'Handley currently serves as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, and as a clinical associate professor at the Department of Family Medicine at Wright State College of Medicine. He also serves as the medical director at Mount Carmel Outreach, helping to provide healthcare to community members who have limited access to basic health services.
From 1995 to 2001, Dr. O'Handley worked as the program director of Mount Carmel Family Practice Residency, and following a role as chief of staff at Lancaster Fairfield Hospital. He also held a private practice in Lancaster, Ohio. He has additional academic experience working as a clinical associate professor at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and as a faculty member of Bethesda Hospital. He has published chapters in books, scientific papers, and articles in professional journals, helping to advance research in his field.
Dr. O'Handley has extended his involvements with his community beyond his professional career. He served as chairman on the board of the Red Cross of Fairfield County, Ohio. He is also medical director of the Asian Free Clinic at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. He served as president of the Central Ohio Academy of Family Physicians, and he is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
The Ohio State University College of Medicine has commended Dr. O'Handley with multiple awards: he was named Distinguished Educator of the Year in 2014; he was the recipient of the Albert Scheweitzer Leadership Award in 2014; the Preceptor of the Year Award by the Alpha Omega Alpha Society in 2013; and the Courage to Teach Award in 2012. He was also honored as a Healthcare Hero by Columbus Business First for his impact on health care improvements for the community of Central Ohio, and in 2017 Dr. O'Handley was honored by the Ohio Academy of Family Practice as Family Medicine Educator of the Year.
Dr. O'Handley is the son of John Grenville and Marie Elizabeth (Schermerhorn) O'Handley. He has been married to Hannah Jane Ryan for more than 40 years. They have four children together: Kathleen M., John R., Brendan J., and Amy E.
