Mr. Abelt is a retired banking executive who rose to lead Bank One, Cleveland, Ohio as chief executive officer in the late '80s and '90s. He served for many years as a vice president with Continental Illinois in Chicago, and currently resides in Arizona. Mr. Abelt now has seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and wants to ensure his legacy is left behind for them.
Born in Elmhurst, Illinois in 1929 to P. Alfred and Clara Abelt, Mr. Abelt joined the U.S. Marines from 1946 to 1948. His tour impacted life immensely, infusing him with a stronger motivation and maturity, and he never saw life the same again. As a first step in his new life, Mr. Abelt studied with the University of Colorado from 1948 to 1952 in banking and finance and received a Bachelor of Science.
One year later, Mr. Abelt earned an MBA from Indiana University, and served to the rank of vice president of banking with Continental Illinois for 24 years. The accrued experience allowed Mr. Abelt to become president and CEO of Bank One of Northeastern Ohio, based in Painesville, which became Bank One of Cleveland in 1983. Mr. Abelt stepped down from his role with the bank in 1986 and became CEO of the Work in Northeast Ohio Council in 1988, where he served until 1991.
Though Mr. Abelt has been a responsible financial steward for all his life, he has also found time for civic duty as an active leader with the Boy Scouts of America in Northeast Ohio. He has also directed the Holden Arboretum in Kirtland, Ohio, the Knowledgeworks Foundation in Cincinnati, and the Oro Valley Community Foundation. Mr. Abelt was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, as well as three volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business and the 1992 to 1993 volume of Who's Who in Finance and Industry. He is the proud parent of Susan E., Christopher M., and Leslie A. alongside his wife Patricia Mitchell.
